When I used to live in Germany in the 70's, I remember there being a big deal about IG Metall union being on strike for a long time.
If you can't get steel from them, you have to buy it elsewhere, or stop building cars. So, Benz did what it had to do. Unfortunately it brought them a little closer to Fiat when it came to rust.

The rust seems to be a problem with the steel -- they were known to rust terribly in northern Germany where salt isn't an issue. Worst spot is the upper sway bar mounts, rusting out from inside, and floors.
The steel was a mix of Russian and Italian due to the protracted German steel strikes, and even German steel in those days was prone to rusting (as any W114/5 owner can tell you!). The W126 and later cars use high strength, thinner steel and rust much less. Peter
