Tom, there are two hoses that connect the tank fittings to the hard lines. These should be obtained from the dealer. This is an ideal time to change them if they are original. I had to do mine just recently because one of them was leaking.

You could also pull the tank strainer, however, you need a short 46mm socket to do it. I've been told a 1 13/16 crow's foot will also do the trick.

I'd siphon out half, fill it up and drive away.

Put half of the stuff you took out in each of your next fillups.

Reminds me of a story. A guy that farms near my uncles was telling me that he had a '82 240. He was on the road with his wife and pulled in to a service station. Put the green handle pump in there and filled her up. Went inside and told lady at the counter "i had whatever in diesel" She said no that was gas. He said well it had the green handle. To which she replied that someone had made a mistake and it was gas instead diesel they had put green handle on. So he goes outside and pushes car out of the way(he has a full tank of gas now) On top of this its bitterly cold out. Guy pulls up in an old ford truck, asks if he needs any help. He tells him the problem. Guy tells him to wait a minute and he will be back. Guy comes back with hose and empty milk jugs.He siphons gas out of tank into jugs and POURS IT IN THE TRUCK! Neighbor was telling me that the old truck was just a carryin on huffin and puffin and coughin but he got it all out(or most of it I guess) pushed it to diesel pump and filled her up. No problems. Said the guy in the old truck took off in a cloud of smoke.

Good story. I've seen gasoline engines running with Diesel in them as a teenager and they remind me of those old trucks that used to "fog" the mesquitos in the neighborhoods late in the evenings.

I saw a 300D at a repair shop that had been run on gas. Motor was toast with oil leaking out of every possible seal. The guy had apparently filled up at a highway truck stop where they had the wrong fuel in the diesel pump. You think they'll pay for the repairs?! Also, my friends sister filled up a 300D with gas and drove it all of a few hundred feet before it stopped dead. Good thing you didn't try to drive it!

My brother-in-law who is a school teacher,,, not a mechanic,,, filled his rented Ryder truck, which was a diesel, with about 80 gallons of gasoline. Didn't realize the mistake until he got back on the Pa. turnpike and it started hammering like crazy. Luckily he didn't ignore it and pulled off and called me. Told him to find a garage and call a tow truck. I think the whole deal cost him around $1000. Luckily he didn't damage the engine,,,, that anyone was aware of.

That will teach you to look for the word "Diesel" on the pump. I always do that and I even trace the hoses to make sure nobody swapped the nozzles. Some may think this is crazy, but the bottom line is I've never put gas in my diesel cars and that's what matters.

You're not so crazy. I always run my finger across the tip of the nozzle, and perform a sniff test. Just in case, as happend to a friend of mine some years back, they put gas the underground diesel tank.

I do the same thing. Never in too much of a hurry to check and make sure I'm not on crack and mistakenly putting gas into my diesel car.

Tom, congrats on doing the right thing and catching it right away. Good tips above as well. I usually take it for granted that it is actually diesel coming out of the hose. As infrequently as I need to fill up, a little extra caution is time well spent.

Every MBZ owners nightmare, gas in a diesel pump!
I think if some bozo put gas into a pump marked diesel and I filled my car from it, the call following the tow call would be for legal advice.
There must be a recourse for that kind of mistake.....

If "Green" is the Standard markings, nothing Green should be on any pump unless it's Diesel coming from it. I think in some areas of the Country "Yellow" is a marking for Diesel. Of course the word spelled "Diesel" shoud be Standard enough.

I agree. Our local diesel outlet will sometimes replace a broken green nozzle with a black one.

My local fill-up place has a black nozzle for diesel and a green for regular.

Drain tank and fill with diesel. The manual states that you are NOT to add gasoline to the fuel under any circumstances on the OM603, probably because you will fry the IP.

At least you didn't start it and run it till it quit.....

Note that you cannot start one of these with large amounts of gasoline in the tank, either because it instantly fries the IP or because the IP won't inject enough fuel to run.
