Looked at a new E320 CDI
Just left the dealer with my 1982 Mercedes 300sd, but I could not resist looking at a new E320 CDI. It is not nearly as big as the old S Class diesel, but it is a nice car. Looked at a light blue one with a few extra's like a moonroof, etc... It listed for $54,000. The mileage rating was between 37-45 highway or something close to that. The salesman said it was a lot faster than the gas model. You can lease one for 39months for $4500 down and $550 per month. That includes all the fees. A little out of my budget. But a nice car. Maybe theyll let me test drive one the next time I visit. Didn't have time today.

New E320 CDI
I also have an 82 300sd and was disappointed at the lack of elbow room in the new 320. Although it looked great on paper, I just don't think I want to spend that kind of money for it. Maybe a used one in a year or two. The new diesel technology makes diesel a clear winner over gasoline in my view. They should spread into more affordable cars. The ultimate economy car would be a diesel-electric hybrid. Who will be first? If history is a guide it will be Honda, even though they are not even on the far horizon yet, doing so well with their gas-electric hybrid.

diesel hybrid ... Mercedes ... what?
37 - 45 MPG for a large sedan such as the E class is incredible! How could anyone ask for more? E classes are for the open highway, not stop and go city driving anyway. How about asking for an E320 CDI 4Matic instead of one with a hybrid drivetrain. Pick your battles and set your priorities. A six-speed manual transmission would be nice too... probably good for an extra 5 MPG.

I'll wait 10years or so. Maybe I'll move up to or get a early 90's 124 while I'm waiting but when the time comes I hope the 320CDI's have proven to be at least somewhat reliable. Some wealthy person will think it is worn out at 150K and let it go for cheap, just like the MB's we drive now. With any luck Mercedesshop forum will be around to advise me on how to keep it running. My E320 CDI looks bigger than it is, but it still fits my huge frame and is comfortable. Its not much different than my old 1992 320SE in roominess.
So far 21,000 flawless miles and counting. Get the panoramic roof - it covers the entire roof section and only costs an extra $400 or so.
