Answer:

The steering wheel tool is used for wheel alignment also.

Level and lock the steering wheel.

Center the steering gear box.

Mount and check.

Generally I am off one or two steering shaft splines, I always move the splines to match.

How do you level and lock the steering box or is that part of using the MB tool? Also, how can you be sure that the steering box is exactly centered since the splines are so fine that just the slightest movement takes it out of alignment. Sorry to poke and prod but I had a hell of a time getting the box in my 116 to line up and it's still off a tooth or two. My problem is that I can't seem to get the wheel portion of the shaft onto the couple once it's already been attached to the box. And once the coupler's on the wheel's end things don't line up the best and it's difficult to get everything to fall together as it should.

You center the gear box; not lock it, I could show you in person, but have no pictures good enough.

Alignment of the steering shaft = paint mark each side of joint, remove gear box mount bolts, disconnect joint, (CLOCK) reorient the splines, reattach and mount, repeat as needed.

Core charge was $400.00 USD, it went back to the rebuilder same day.

There is a 420 with 120k miles on it at a local u-pull it. I'm hoping to take the box out of it and put it on my SDL. I think that it will be quite a bit tighter, then it what I'll do is open the old one out of my SDL and hopefully bring it up to one of our Detroit G2Gs!

i had the same problem in the wheels this is what i

did the type of gear boxs in the 84 300sd you can ajusted the steering nut on the gear box counter clock wise quarter at a time till you get the play out
it seem these boxs proned to this play after about 60,000 miles it worth a try them boxs are not cheap

preston, I've tried the nut but it depends what's wearing in the box if that nut will do anything. I could try to adjust it more but I don't want to overdue it until I'm ready for the other box.

This Raymond485 character (or computer script) is so predictible now, it saw that the thread (a very OLD thread) was about "replacing a steering box" and it took those inputs and gave a price on steering boxes. 1984 Olds? what the heck? and always begins with "1984 300d Turbo 140,000" Someone should ban the screen name or something. Not once have I actually seen this "person" "talk" with any emotion or anything. Quite annoying. Plus, even though it always gives prices and stupid instructions, it never says WHERE the price was found, nor anything else useful.

I gotta say I think you're off base here. I clicked on "find all posts" for Raymond485, and while minimally communicative, its fairly unusual to see prices. I do see posts that say where the items were found, etc. If he's too annoying (or if I am, I suppose ) there's always the ignore list...

Sorry for the rant, its just that there's been a post by him in that style on practically every other thread I've been on and they began to annoy me to the point of ranting. It'd be nice if he'd actually talk though....I'll just try to ignore it.

Ok

His English skills are poor, however that does not reflect how good he is with a wrench.
One of the best mechanics I know is Cajun, he can read eight languages, fixes anything, and has a heavy Louisiana deep bayou Cajun accent plus a bad stutter that makes most conversation impossible.

Better that moderators know some members find his posts difficult to fathom.

Has anyone had one of their steering boxes apart yet? I saw a reference to some nylon bushings somewhere in relation to a 123 box I thought but discounted it. Anyone ever see any evidence of that kind of thing in There and if they are load bearing? Probably not likely but then again these boxes seem to go sloppy pretty early or all the odometers have been messed with perhaps. In fact the last box to consistantly get this sloppy was the early 50s chev box in my memory. I am sure there were many others that I am not aware of as well. I thought the rebuilders were not putting new gears in for an average 123 rebuild. What are the typical failure items I wonder? Can you post what you see after your get together to examine that old boxes internals. An easier fix than a four hundred dollar rebuild for a loose 123 box would be really helpful to members of this site.
