New exhaust on a 300SDL *VIDEO*
We put a new exhaust on my friends 87 300SDL.. 2.5" straight pipe from the turbo all the way back. It sounds great and the power comes on quicker and much longer thru the revs.
The sound is ridiculous.. we will probably add a free flowing muffler at some point to tone it down. This is a quick video of the car.. http://www.crazymatt.org/badbenz.wmv right click, save-as. 12MB

You're right. The sound is ridiculous.
But, some nice sliding for such a big vehicle. |

Wow..haha that's pretty cool. Wonder what a 617 would sound like... friggin loud at idle i bet.
Can anyone be more specific on this straight pipe business? I don't know much about this stuff.

I tried the straight pipe on my 83 300D... it sounded pretty bad. not particularly loud or anything.. just bad.
Thats a straight pipe.. no mufflers. This pic is my 300D with a 3" straight pipe.

I won't go into details about my night time activities with the benz here is a video with (I am sorry) not such great auido but it gives you an idea of what a flowmaster dual chamber sounds like with no resonators (subtract a little volume as the camera tunes in on the deep noise and not the top) Other than subtracting the resonators and chaning the muffler, all else is stock (on the exhaust system ) BTW this is a 617 Turbo 300SD Benz Movie ~3.5Megs Windows Media I will try to get some outside the car sound samples...has a nice throaty sound to it...no annoying allergic reaction/closing windpipe sort of sounds |

That's a really nice sounding exhaust there. I noticed when you were taking those turns there wasn't much body lean (on the car or you!). My 300D leans a lot, I thought they were designed like that. Guess not?

It leans a little...but I am good about staying in my seat (I offroad a great deal in my VW or in the benz ) THe body roll isn't bad at all, espically considering a week later I found that one of my shock mounts had one broken bolt and one missing bolt since I got the car! It was the passenger side front shock on the bottom mount. Corners a lot better now even at 4k the exhaust sounds nice but not overly noisey. Its noticeably louder around the 1800-2k range without the resonators however I like the light sound as compared to overwhelming quiet. |

THe phrase "straight pipe" basically means someone took out the resonators, (first muffler looking things under the passenger compartment) and took out the stock muffler (out back) and ran a "straight pipe" all the way from the turbo outlet to the back of the car. Basically this equates to no backpressure on the turbo (from exhaust stacking up in the muffler/resonators) and usually helps performance/fuel efficiency of the auto. The cost of straight pipes? Noise+NOISE! |
