300d trani slipping 3 to 4 to 3...sometimes

Just wondering if you can shed light on my enigma. My 1990 124 300d [140k miles] often refuses to shift into 4th and/or "slips" into 3rd when accelerating thru 60-64mph range. Then it sometimes will shift back into 4 if I put in neutral & coast ~5 seconds. Problem manifests after 25 miles drive in warm Florida turnpike weather. But the MB tech found same only in cold [cooler] weather. Dealer says no clue unless they conduct open transurgry. What about

Any idea of potential cause? Is there a moderate cost fix? Do I need a rebuilt? Am I better off with a rebuilt now if I decide to keep the car? If so, who is the better/best rebuilt trani provider?

Thx.

Have you tired Trans-X yet.....if its shot its shot, but if there is some varnish or crud buildup causing it , this just might fix it.....

But first....does your fluid smell burned or is it brown.....if it is leave well enough alone. Becasue then you will be needing a rebuild.

Its not shot, you have to reshim it to specification..

I had this problem once when I rebuilt my 83 240D. There should be a procedure in your service CD, and Doctor Boneheaddoctor, I know you are good enough to fix it...

Mr. Boneheaddoctor,
Sorry, first I thought you were the guy asking ie the one who started this post; I wouldnt second guess you or correct you out of respect , without writing it carefully, I know you know your stuff and you have solved several of my problems...
Second, I thought this was Manual Transmission. so my answer makes no sense...
