Newbie's Post-Search Request:
I searched, but did not find a thread that completely answered this question:
What are the tools that I should have on hand to work on a 240d at home? I'm a novice, but I have a friend who has worked extensively on his own cars who has promised his help. Incidentally, thank you all. I've been reading for a number of weeks, and you all make it great reading. I had the opportunity to meet Kamil through buying some stuff out of his parted out car, and he's a prime example of the great people here. If I knew abut you earlier, I wouldn't have bought so much rust to go along with my 999.00 eBay 1983 240d! That said and done, I'm enough into it (a/c repair, control arm, axle repair, replace floor pans/front doors, etc.) to see this one through. Thankfully, I have a friend who does good body work out of his home. THAT part isn't killing me. |

Your car is pretty simple to work on and you won't need a lot of out of the ordinary tools. A good set of metric, 3/8" drive sockets (7mm to 19mm), extensions (3",6" and 12"), combination open/box end wrenches (7mm to 19mm), allen wrenches, and a volt meter will go aong way to fixing most things on your car. Good lighting, a set of ramps, jacks, and jack stands are nice to have, also. One out the ordinary tool you will need to change the tranny and differential fluids is a 14mm allen wrench. Most allen wrench sets only go to 10mm and the 14mm is more difficult to find. I got mine from Fastenall. Some of the guys have bought a special set of wrenches to adjust their valves, but I have adjusted mine several times without them. A 27mm socket is good to have to turn the crankshaft, if you need to.
Probably a lot more that you could get that might make some jobs easier.... Good luck!

....and make that 27mm socket a deep one, with about 56 mm in depth so that you can also use it to remove/install injectors. A basic one for under $10 like mine is all you need.

Actually, there's a guy selling prechamber pullers on Ebay that are not too expensive. He's just down the road from here, so I'm thinking about picking one up.
And who the heck needs the shop manuals? All we have to do is come here and ask stuff and you will look it up for us.

Where do you get a shop manual for a 123 and a 126? I'd love to get one and even CD's, although I hear the CD's don't get really detailed.

The paper manuals are out of print, but they do show up on Ebay now and then. There's a 617.95 engine manual here.
