1982 240D Mercedes Purchase advice

Hi All,

I am looking at this 1982 240D, with 220K miles in Southern California. Can somebody please give me a price range
for fair and good condition for this car with 220k miles mileages.

Also, what should I look for when I check it out. This will be my first diesel, If I buy it.

The seller is asking @2800.

Thanks for your help all the time.

Sam

Nothing you will be told on this forum will mean as much as a proper pre-purchase inspection ($100-150). I'm sure you'll get lots of advice on who can check the car for you. If you're near Encino, a fellow by the name of Enrique (name of shop?) is the man to for you.

That price seems a little low for an asking price in SoCal. I'd expect the car to need some work. If you're looking for a keeper or you don't like to get your hands dirty, look at the honest $4000 240Ds and talk them down.

Sixto,

I know Enrique of MB Motors. I take my 300E there. The car is located in Santa Barbara, which is 1.5 hour from Enrique. Does anybody knows of good shop in Santa Barbara?

Thanks for the feedback

Sam

Granny's Garage or Muller & Goss, both in the same area, around Quarantina Street.

A few months ago I sold my 1982 240D on Ebay for $3100. It was a beautiful two owner garage-kept in near immaculate shape with 220k also. There was a chip in the windshield and the ac quit, otherwise it was fantastic. Had a 4-speed, cruise, power antenna, manual windows and sunroof - all worked.

This was in the DC area which has a LOT of used Mercedes for sale, though the buyer was from NJ.

Might give you a starting point since Ebay prices are generally what the market will bear.

Incidentally, when I bought the car 2 and a half years ago it had 175k and the ac worked and the windshield had no chips. From the original owner who bought it in Germany (US spec) and brought it home. All receipts since new, etc. Paid $2700.

I paid $4500 for a 77 300d with 55k original miles from original owner, always garaged. So, your price seems high to me given the mileage. But, all prices are relative to the market.
