A skid plate

A skid plat would have prevented this occurance.

See attached.

Yep...I am guessing with that amount of damage he should be just fine on the oil level (it probably went closer to the top notch on the stick but still ok). Unless you do some serious inplosion of the pan (like I did) I think you are alright.

Update

I looked into a skid plate today, Mercedes no longer makes them. Just means I shall have to fabricate one.

The pan is off, no oil pump damage other then the rubber nozzle, which is replaceable for $18.

I'm including a picture of a new pump to show the rubber piece new (1.5-2 inchs tall), opposed to mine which is flat.

Parts will be here Wednesday, and hopefully go back together easily.

Yeah my rubber pickup part was wasted when I took my pan off...they seem to not enjoy the heat.
It is still probabably broken as I wasn't going to wait around for parts to arrive for it.
Looks like you got the pan pretty well beat back out?

How difficult is it to replace an oil pump, and get the sprocket and chain back on? Looks fairly straightforward, but looks can.....well, you know. How does the sprocket attach, and do you slide it on with the chain around it already?
Great picks! I've never had the pan off, so that was great to see.

Friendly neighborhood MB dealer, Park Place Motors in Bedford, TX. Parts guy's name is Rodney. Of course, they don't stock it, but it is availble to order. Not sure if additional mounting hardware may be involved, I didn't pursue it that far.

I'm not sure about the difficulty of removing the pump, only the rubber piece . Its always fun to see deep into the heart of the bottom end of the engine.

Unfortunately, I have seen the 240D with the pan off. There is a spot near my house where there is a sign:

Caution
Dip ahead
20 MPH

Well, I was used to taking it at 40+ in the 300D. First time I tried that in the 240D it punched out the oil pan. New engine mounts raised the engine 1/2 inch or so. New shocks improved the ride and maybe raised it another 1/4 inch. When I was changing the oil I noticed fresh scrapes on the pan. What it really needs is new springs, but that's out of my DIY league. I'm thinking about the skid pan, I may give it a try.

I was told that it is still in the system, but my guy (deals mostly with older vehicles), said he has a few that have been on back order for almost a year now.

I will check on availability again tomorrow. Usually when I'm looking for an obscure part, he can look up how many are in stock, both stateside and Germany.

The 240D is a manual, so no tranny cooler involved. I would love to see pictures of the installation. Actually, I think there may be some waaay back in the archives somewhere.
