Need some expertise - noise, steadly getting worse

thru the day. Took valve cover off. Checked valve tappet clearance - ok. Removed alternator, found alternator bolt holes wollered(there's a good southern word!) out. Still terrible knocking when running. Noticed crank pulley wobbling. Loosened power steering belt, noise stopped until we put the load from the steering unit back on the crank pulley. Checked the pulley and found it loose on the balancer. Tried to tighten the bolts holding the pulley to the balancer and can't get a socket or wrench on them. Comments invited.

Thanks for any help, guys.

Unhappy Hmmm

Remove harmonic balancer assembly.
Remove belt pulley from balancer.
Inspect bolt holes and crank shaft.

If the pulley bolt holes are damaged, I have tapped out the holes on several of these to one size over.
The problem is it reduces harmonic balancer strength/life, in some cases.

If the crank is damaged, you have serious issues to face.

The pulley on my "79" (before I rebuilt the eng.) 240D came off while my daughter was returning home from a movie in town. By the time I got there they had retrieved all the pieces from the bushes along the road. On mine there was 3 allens holding it on. They had broken and since there were 6 threaded holes in the ballencer I just rotated the pulley and used 3 new holes. I removed the radiator to be able to get a clear shot at the allens.

Crank balancer/pulley

240D, engine #'s ('77) 616 912-12-009355, ('83) 616.912-12-077718. Where do I go to see if these will interchange before I dig into the '83 parts car? I checked for price of a pulley and was advised there were three different ones.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Is this something that needs to be checked? I have never looked at my balancer and pulleys.

I have been advised that the part numbers

are the same for the crank balancer on the '77 and the '83 - so it looks as tho I'll be ok if the one on the parts car is good. Thanks, fellers.

Just removed balancer and pulley from the parts car and

it is different from the '77. The '83 one has no timing scale. There is a pin sticking out that looks as tho it is to activate what looks to be a crank sensor. BuyMB parts advised the pieces were the same on these two engines. Any thoughts or is it time to order the correct balancer and pulley? I also note that the pulley('83) has been weighted.

For those that might have some remote interest in this thread.

We installed the balancer off the '83, used the pulley off the '77(had to drill three more holes in order to put six bolts[w/threadlocker] in there. Enging fired on the second glow cycle and runs just as it should. Thanks, guys for all the help. Now all I gotta do is get the oil off the fenders....
