Fan clutch mounting bolts.. rounded off (vent)

Well this year is off to a good start.

My wifes car is awaiting parts for a timing chain replacement so I decided to take care of some maint on my 300CD. I'm in the process of adding heating lines for my WVO system and I had to drain the coolant. So I figured while I'm at it I would replace the water pump since its weeping a little and I'll have all the coolant out of the engine anyway to tap hoses.

Wouldn't you know it.. The last person (wasn't me) to remove the fan cluth from the water pump rounded off all the bolts. So I figured no problem. I'll just remove the water pump and take the fan and all out as a single unit. No such luck. It appears that the same freak has also replaced or at least tried to replace the water pump. All of the bolts on the water pump are damaged as well. In the process of trying to get the pump bolts off I decided the thermostat housing was in the way. So I went to remove the cover and broke one of the bolts off in the housing. After getting that broken bolt free (fortunately it didn't break flush with the housing) I discovered that the water pump was sealed with either JB weld or some other adhesive. Its stuck and its not moving.

What a day.

new acronym needed

James,

I sometimes follow a Jag newsgroup as well. Many of them have been butchered in the past. The new owners run into circumstances like yours pretty often. At one time they used the acronym PO for Previous Owner. So often that was prefaced with D*** that the usual description is now "that DPO".

Good luck.

Chuck

damaged fasteners etc.

If you really feel that someone has used a product like jb weld or simular try heating up the waterpump flange a little. Most plastic cannot stand much more than 200 degrees in my experience. The heat should be enough to degrade the sealant so you can achieve separation. Of course make absolutly sure you have got all the bolts removed as on a few types of waterpumps I have overlooked one on occasion. I live in an extremely corrosive enviroment so dealing with rounded off fittings is just a way of life. Just looked in manual for 123 types. To access one bolt you have to rotate slot in balancer to get it apparently. Also pretty sure that pressure line to head is also a pump retaining bolt and wonder if you may be missing one of these as you still have fluid coupling and perhaps fan partially obscuring your view. You should have five normal bolts out as well as one hollow one that feeds line to head before trying to remove pump. Best of the season.

I've never actually removed the flange to replace the pump. I've just unbolted the pump from the flange directly.

I was finally able to seperate the water pump from the fan clutch with the application of heat and PB blast and a good large set of vise grips. The hard part is holding the stinking pully stationary while doing all that.

A few well placed smacks with a hammer worked the pump free of the flange. Wan't JB weld. Just a fair bit of rust mating the pump with the flange.

On to tackle the thermostat housing.. wee..

IMHO one of the reasons the fan bolts get rounded off is they are so close to the mounting flange that you cannot get the box end of a wrench on them and using the open end rounds them off. I ground the box end of an old 10mm wrench down thin enough to allow it to slip past the interfering flange. It works great and no rounded off fan bolts. Just something you may want to try in future. Patience.......is a virtue......and in this situation your best friend...

if you feel the need to bash something its time to put away the tools for the day. Heat and penitrating oil.....and lots and lots of patience....

ever try the needle nose vice grips? after heat and penitrating oil it MAY, just may get things loose.

If I followed those 2 I'd never be able to work on my car.

You know.. drinking alone is a sign of Alcoholism.. Is wrenching alone a sign of dieselism?
