What do you do when they dont take your advice on the Diesel Forum?

Believe me this Forum is 3000X better than any other car forum but sometimes you see quizzical stuff.. What do you do when they dont take your advice on the Diesel Forum? Today i saw someone tell someone else their W123 lighting was done by Fiber Optics.
I knew the exact solution to the guy's problem, I 've rewired those dashes 20 times, but he didn't want to listen. I may not be as good as Hatteras Guy, gsxr or Larry Bible or Pete Burton,or Diesel Dog but I am good, take my word for it...
(1) Let them fry thier own fish
(2) Go along with the science fiction, and tell them the fiber optics sytem is connected to the vacuum system by a fiber vacuum transducer
(3) Get corroborating posters to help..

All you can do is smile quietly to yourself and hope they enjoy finding the carbon fiber upgrade filament kit from nasa.

Let them figure it out themselves, all you can do is tell them what you know. I have pretty much left MBworld because of complete idiots that thought they knew everything. Their are certain people that know enough to do damage, and when you try to explain why say, atf is bad for the power steering or why K&N filters are a bad idea it is like talking to a brick wall. I am a member of 3 other MB forums, one Saturn, one Jag and one Genaral car forum. I find this forum to be the bast out of all the MB ones. Jaglovers has a lot of good people on it. The Saturn one has a few that really know their stuff, but after reading posts like: "their was no oil on my dipstick is that bad?" "I drove it 5k miles and didn't check the oil" I have yet to see one of these on MS.

The center console is done by fiber optics on the Early ACC types.....I know my W116 is and it uses the same Chrysler designed monstroscity.

All you can do is offer advice......

If they ignore it and follow their all knowing buddy who says its fine to drain the oil fill it up with kerosene and run it 100 miles to clean out crud.....

shortly into which it siezes the engine...all you can do is smuggly say I told you so.

why K&N filters are a bad idea
Is this true? I was considering buying one.

Also, you have to use your head when taking advice but to ignore advice that is clearly explained is apparently true is just stupid.

MB don't gain anything with K&N filters, but they do let a lot more crap through than the OE ones. Also on the newer MB with MAF sensors the oil from the K&N's can ruin them. These sensors seem to run in the $400-$700 range and the V engines usually have two.

Don't worry about the person who posts the question..... if they already disagree or don't believe you you are not likely to change their minds..
However, you should state your best arguement for OTHERS who will see the discussion... both now and in the future....
Perhaps they will even give you credit when they find out you are correct... not likely... but maybe...

Start posting over at the Open Discussion where everyone ignores everyone else's argument under the best of circumstances and under the worst just posts bald assertions with no supporting evidence at all.

Hattersguy,
My favorite line, uttered by a coworker, as he called me for advice on his 3 cyl geo Metro," Its making the same noise it always makes when its out of oil" he wasn't kidding!

i havent really given out much of an advice on this board.. but i think it would really be helpful to us "newbies" (perhaps).. and other lost souls to see the different view points on a certain topic.

Simply let the other person who doesnt want to listen to find out his mistakes (if there are any)... as long as you have spoken your peace... it is already up to the readers to digest it and either use it or not.

as far as the fiber optic is concerned.. i'm not sure if it is fiber optic.. but my center console lighting does use some sort of plastic strand to disseminate the lights to the various places...i guess it is something like a fiber optic.

It shouldn't bother you, say what you have to say and move on. Anyone whose opinion should matter to you will understand. Why would you care what morons think? Don't be upset because **** stinks, it just does because that is what it does.

My 115 body had fiber optics in the center console. Even my 126 has some in the center console. Although I had my 201 dashboard out 3 times, I don't remember if it used them. I never have seen one work decently.

Wow so my w116 center console is lighted by fiber optics? Dang I was going to tear into it to figure out what bulbs to use... I'm going to have to search for you post to see how to fix it... So thanks in advance!
Also don't worry about those that don't listen... they will find their own way... but there are many of us that find your advice helpful... even if it wasn't directed to us at the time...

I have always had a simple philosophy, and it's not original of course. If you ASK someone's advise, or ask for help, have the courtesy to follow said advise. (advice or advise??. Oh well..)
If you are the advisor, you were courteous enough to offer said advise, and often times your info benefits more than just the one who asked original question.
That's why a wise man said, "You can lead a horse to water........."
Keep it up.
My thoughts

My attitude generally:
I offer advice, if you use it, great, if you ignore it, ok, it is your choice.
Do not take it as a personal issue; it is not your knuckles getting shredded, or your wallet.
Relax, offer advice and have an adult beverage of your choice, while you do it.

Personal attacks = BAD, that is one of many reasons I like this forum, we can be civil and disagree, but the wonderful "moderators" here will squash flamers, SPAMMERS and other parasites fast.
