15,000 miles to Alaska and back on my '80 300SD. Got about 22 MPG because I was pulling a small camper.

Got all the way home to PA without alternator working after it stopped working in AK. It was the brushes that were worn out, after replacing them alternator has been wroking ever since. That was in 1991.

When I bought my 300SDL a friend and I flew down to Austin Texas and drove back the 1,675 miles to Ontario in 23 hours (actual driving) with 28 mpg and an average speed of 72.8 mph (not including stops). Great trip with zero problems (except for the speeding ticket in Dallas!! ) and no oil consumption.

I plan to drive to Florida and back in February which will be a 2,800+ mile round trip.

I've driven my 450SEL to California and back twice, along with trips to N.C., Tennessee, Wisconsin, Missouri and a few places a little closer. But, I've not driven the 300CD more than 800 miles on one trip. While my mother was very ill over a two month span a couple of years ago, I did put 13,800 miles on the coupe. That seemed like one long trip. She lives about 120 miles away and I was driving there and back every day. I would also work in my business the usual hours five days a week during that period. I was pretty tired of being in that car at the end of the two months.

I don't know about longest distance but how about longest non-stop driving: 16 hours from South Beach to Richmond stopping only for fuel and quick bites to eat.

Marlene and I drove from Oklahoma City to Austin one afternoon only to turn around and make the trip back to OKC for SWMBO (no, I didn't forget her) at 2:00 the next morning and then return directly to Austin. Not exactly continuous driving but still, that's something like 1200 miles in 16 hours.

When I get Sybill the SDL in shape, and I feel confident of her reliability, I'm planning on using her for a whirlwind trip to Sedona, AZ to take care of some personal business for my dear departed aunt; a trip that should qualify for some continuous driving achievments.

The Other Vehicle...
With Thing One behind her wheel, Passion Flower ('85 300TD) just did a straight through, San Diego to Austin run in about 22 something hours.

IMHO, the 'Flower' should get some sort of 'lifetime achievement' award. Since her purchase for $700 in the fall of 2003, she's gone from Austin to Islip, NY, returned to Austin via New Orleans, left and traveled to Eugene, OR on the way to Skagway, AK. After spending the summer in Skag, shuttling between there and Whitehorse, BC she came back down to the lower 48 to rest in McMinville, OR for the fall. After Thing One completed a bike trip down the coast, the 'flower was once again on the road, making the run from Oregon to San Diego then home to Austin as mentioned above.

Mplafleur,

That trip to Alasksa was done in about 7 weeks because we went thru western US and Vegas first. Then when when I got back home, I put on another 1000 miles in a week for a total of 8000 miles in 8 weeks.

My longest solo trip was in my old n/a 1979 300TD. No A/C, mid-July, intermittent cruise, am/fm only no tape deck , 305k odometer reading before departure. Buffalo to Dallas. Almost 1500mi one way because I had to take a detour; I-79 south all the way through OH. Did it in almost 20hrs there, 19hrs on the way back, w/ two drunken nights (I think...) in Dallas as turn around time. Pretty much had the pedal to the rusty metal, esp from Nashville on. She was a trooper (loving refered to as "the Beast"), RPM's much higher than I would have liked at 80+mph w/ the wagons gearing. Didn't sleep at all on the way down, 2hr nap in a truck stop parked btw rigs on the way back.
Blew a rear suspension hydralic line on the way down....I cannot tell you how much friendlier truckers are if your running in a diesel!! They love seeing that little W123 amongst their rigs, and if they see you under the hood they'll stop and see if you need tools, or help as long as it says "diesel" on the back. One huge smelly trucker just walked up and gave me a coffee just shy of midnight somewhere east of the AK border, while I was trying to plug the hydralic line to the back to stop the "oil slick" I was imposing on traffic. No explanation. Just a "good luck" and a black coffee.
Pretty delierious on the way back. Remember dancing x-mas trees on the side of the road...the Planter's Peanut guy hitchhiking somewhere on the Bluegrass Pkwy at some forgotten time of the morning... You learn a lot about yourself spending that kind of time sweating all alone, ears ringing from having the windows down @ 80mph for the last 1000mi, voice hoarse from talking to yourself/singing...
Wish I had the time to that kind of stuff now (or is it the money that I lack?...either way....)
Keep rackin' up the miles (or kilometers)! That's what these cars were built for!

Thumbs up Long Distance Cruiser

In summer of 2003, I drove my '82 300SD, with 320,000 miles on it, from SoCal to Seattle, WA and back helping a friend move (June). I then drove from SoCal to Bangor, Maine for a friend's wedding and back to SoCal (July). Then I drove from SoCal to Denver, CO for some camping, and back to SoCal (Aug). Those 3 trips put 3,100 miles, 7,800 miles, and 2,300 miles on my car, for a total of over 13,000 miles in about 10 weeks. The only problem was a windshield wiper motor that died in Maine, which I replaced from a scrap yard for $20 and an hour of my time and tools. Kind of a 'super' Italian tune-up, all those miles, and some of those days I'd drive 10-12 hours at a time. The car felt as good after 12 hours as it did after 12 minutes. I usually drive at about 65-70 mph on the freeway, and avoid any speeding tickets from coast to coast. These 300SD's are built to cruise!

All I can say is..
Damn.....

I think my longest trip so far is a shade over 100 miles one way...I am waiting for school to let loose for a road trip (and a co-pilot that is actually worth a snuff!)

Btw is it P.E.H who has the record so far? we have a lot of 10k+ trips...amazing!

I think he gets some small award though considering the lack of alternator . Gotta love those battery chargers
