Knowing what I know now? I'm still glad I got the 300TD. However, my second choice at the moment would be a Unimog 404 w/ OM617 Turbo. Vroom vroom!

peace,
sam

After that, I had a GP failure and it broke in the head. Head came off and just got fixed yesterday. It will be an annual event where I take out the GPs so they don't get stuck in the head. Also, when they are out, I will clean the bore and put a new coat of anti-sieze which should fix this problem.

I also head they are prone to spring perch failure.

What else can I expect?
How much maintenance is to much, or. Is she a shop queen or not.

With respect to the TDI question, that's just a VW marketing thing. All the newer diesels are direct injection. The CDIs have one common rail from the IP with computer controlled injectors to provide that exact amount of fuel needed for a particular load, while I think the VWs have a sort of mini pump on each line to achieve more or less the same thing.

Now, as to the "best"... If money were no object, I'd buy the CDI engine and drop it into a 126 chassis. Failing that, the turbocharged OM617 is a nice combination of durable and reliable. I will say that if I lived in a super cold area and had to park outside, I'd probably want a OM60x for the easier starting.
