First Signs of Starter Gear Failure
OK its raining cats and dogs out here. Meow!
Started up the car after stopping a few minutes. The starter sounded like it didn't fully engage the flywheel gear for a split second and then fully engaged. Hope this is not something that continues to get worse. Especially while its so wet outside. If the starter gear gets buggered up the gear replacable or do I need to get a rebuilder involved? (not to mention that the starter is a PIA to replace on a turbo).

starter SOLENOID
Hi, your problem has been exasperated by the cold weather.
Either replace the entire starter OR remove the unit and ONLY relpace the SOLENOID. The solenoid is an electrically operated plunger that engages the starter drive gear with the flywheel ring gear. It is sticking either going in or out. You may be real cheap and have success disassembling said solenoid and cleaning the plunger and its bore with alcohol. Then lube and reassemble. A little bit of a gamble perhaps......................... Good luck and best wishes always, spo out |
