Trouble getting axles for a '79 300SD (116)

Howdy, all.

I need to replace both half-axles in my SD. I saw that many people here had gone to advance, carquest, etc. in the past for their 123s, but I've tried all those places and more and have yet to find anyone selling these axles. I'm about to call fastlane and ask how much the flanges are to adapt over to the anular axles from my current homokinetics, but the axles alone would cost me $240. Anyone know of any alternatives or work-arounds?

Thanks in advance!

have you looked into geting your axles rebuilt?i ran into this same problem with my 80 300sd

Actually, no. What did it cost to have your axles rebuilt? I'll have to call around town and see who can do that.

Thanks for the idea.

to be honest i only explored the option.never acted upon it.im still running the original halfshafts with 1 torn boot.just keep filling it up with grease.still works great.are you sure the axles need replacing?i looked into this through a local parts supplier.to be sure the 116 axles are not as common but definately available

I removed them last night and found one to be half-way useable with a torn boot, but still fairly good articulation at the joints. The other way has seen much better days. Boot is shredded (literally-- PO tried to seal it up with hose clamps and they didn't help, to say the least) and the joint is pretty well seized.

I have a 79 300CD at the local pull 'n pay that I can get parts off of, but I haven't tried since Fastlane shows different part numbers for the 123 and 116 axles. Has anyone tried using 123 axles in a 116?

Thanks again!

the 123 axle is too short.

DOH! that's what I thought. I mean, you don't go giving a chassis a different name without changing dimensions, design, etc.

It was such a nice thought, though...
