Is your car smoother after an oil change?
I know it may well be my imagination, but I swear my car sounds smoother right after an oil change. My friend claims the same for his '84 300D. I will have to see if I can tell how long the feeling lasts, but listening to it idle after the 18 mile drive to work it sounded smooth and quiet.

My Euro 500SEL sounded much smoother after the oil change I gave to it a few weeks ago. But then again, that was its first oil change after sitting for almost two years!

KCampbell,
NO, not smoother after oil change. It might be the placebo effect. P E H |

To determine if it is indeed the placebo effect, try filling the crankcase with water instead of oil and then you can see whether it's the fresh oil or not.

This is no joke now. A friend of mine found that his Vette was blowing blue smoke. He drained the crankcase, filled it with some sort of solvent up to the valve covers and ran the car for 30 seconds. Drained it and had all sorts of black sludge. He figured the car was due for a rebuild anyways. Filled it with fresh oil and drove it for a bit, and drained and filled the pan again. Seems it was fine after that.

I don't notice a difference after I change the oil.

I have noticed a slight increase in smoothness after an oil change, mines getting one tomorrow or thursday so I'll be sure to try and pay attention closely before and after.

I filled my '80 TD crank case (to the normal level sans filter)with diesel and let it run for 1 minute (right after I bought it), and drained it. Very black diesel, and a much better running engine. Is is a wise move? Have no proof one eay or the other, but many older marine diesels I've worked on seemed to like it years back.

If I really stretch it I could see that maybe if your crankcase contained some light distillates and the vapors were getting into the combustion chambers they could make the engine run a little differently. It is a stretch.
Years ago I did a similar flush job on an engine that had little to lose. Don't know if it did any good but the engine ran a long time afterwards. Don't remember what I used, probably diesel. Seems like it was right before I dropped the pan and valve covers and had them dipped while off. All in all it removed quite a lot of crud from the engine. |
