Quietest my engine has ever run-Marvel Mystery oil
 

I got some bad diesel at the truckstop the other day. I usually fill up at BP station in town at same pump every time - never bad fuel. Well, it sounded like it was "nailing" which it has NEVER done. Especially since I had just run 2 cans of Lubro Molly through last week.

I added a full bottle of Redline Diesel fuel catalyst and half a 32oz bottle of marvel mystery oil to the tank and topped off with 5gals of fuel at BP. When I got home - my engine was so quiet I forgot I was driving a diesel.

My 90 year old grandfather put Marvel Mystery Oil in crancase oil on every small engine and car. He also added it to gas. He never had carburator problems or cylinder or ring wear problems. I think his using it for over 50 years says something for this product. Glad I discovered it again.

I have heard tha MMO is basically the same as ATF.

Can anyone shed any light on what MMO is?

I've read on several other tech forums about adding ATF to the crankcase to help lube things up, help sticky lifters, and all kinds of other benefits.

I've added ATF to my fuel tank and it the car seemed to be "happy" with it.

Adding a whole bottle of RedLine alone will quiet any diesel, thing is, can you afford to run a full $5 bottle of RedLine at every fill?

I run a mixture of Power Services winter formula with anti-gel agents and RedLine. I add only about a half cup at fill up and my 603 is very quiet and responsive. Adding Mystery oil may be a waste, my opinion, but cant hurt! :) BB

As I mentioned in another thread, I used MMO religiously in all my former VW Diesels, when I could get it. By putting it in the fuel, I found it quieted the clatter down so well I could hear the "vrrrroooom" of the air intake under the hood while driving. Also, a couple of days before an oil change, I would put as much as I could to top up the engine oil and drive normally, for an effective cleanout. My last VW Diesel died of terminal floor rot at 413,000 KMs, but the engine was as strong as ever.

Just found MMO again at Canadian Tire and put 8 oz. into half a tank of fuel in my 300D. After a couple of jaunts on the highway, it must have got well mixed with the fuel, and I noticed a definate quieting of the power plant, especially noticable when coasting to a stop- the 300D always seemed to emit a clatter before, which is now pretty much gone.

I swear by MMO- I don't particularly care what's in it, or what the big mystery is- all I can say is it works well, and does what it says it will do on the can.

My indie mechanic recommended adding some ATF to the crankcase oil in my gasser 6.9 and sure enough the occassional lifter noise at cold startup (I drive it maybe once every 2 weeks) hasn't resurfaced. :D

I use it on every fill up too, and there is a distinct difference between our two diesels in how they idle, and how much power they have. My dad does not often use additives, I always use MMO on every fillup, and the difference is easily seen in comparison with both engines running.

IIRC Marvel Mystery Oil has a wintergreen oil base. I have no inkling at all about additives... :cool:

What concentration have you been adding. For 20 gallons of fuel, how much MMO is used?

Hey Willrev--my Unc and Dad, now both deceased,(would both be over 100 yrs. old if still living) swore by the stuff also. They put it in their motors, fishing reels, firearms--never was a day when a can of MMO was not in the garage. I'm surprised they didn't give it to us as a cure for colds, stomach aches ect. who konws-maybe they did?? I never put it in my engines though-whats the ratio you add?? :D :D

I usually dump a whole 32oz bottle in at each fill up, which averages 14-16 gallons, and the fuel still in there also had MMO in it, so essentially the fuel is getting more and more concentrated of MMO over time :D :D Runs smooth as silk though, lots of power too, I like it.....

Does it blow more smoke?

A little bit :D If I really lay into it then its visible, but not under normal driving, mine has always smoked more than our 83 does, but it also moves a lot faster, so I don't know. A little extra smoke is fine with me from the way its running.
