in the past week or so that it was running, i noticed the car was shaking pretty good on soft left hand curves....and i mean real good, feels like the wheel is moments from saying adios to the car, and it probably is....but thats the only time it was noticable....to make a 90 degree turn, you wouldnt feel it....but only on really soft turns at highway speeds( 55-65mph)...if you straighten it out a little, it goes away....

so, where do i go from here? i know this isnt roadworthy

Ahhh.

Makes me want to check my car out. Too cold, however.
Don't know what to say about that, other than it is a potential safety issue and needs professional opinion.

Good luck.

yes you should fix it, but it's probably no disaster. Looks like the guide rod could be failing which would cause that support to get pushed back and forth like that, beating the nut retainer through the body slot. This job isn't too technically difficult, but it can be a little messy. If that sheet metal retainer breaks off when you try to remove the bolt don't despair. I made a tool that fits through the body slot (it will FLY through that slot of yours ) and holds the nut.

You'll need these http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1EH0QMNRO1FG0ZUPLP&year=1985&make=MB&model=300-SD-002&category=L&part=Bearing+Bracket+Bushing plus new bolts and new nuts with the spring retainers (dealer-only part).

Remove the bearing bracket and press in the new big bushing and replace. A 2"X4" or a come-along to move the control arm assembly forward helps.

Technique is covered in the archives as well as home made press for the bushings. The bearing bracket with the guide rod mount WILL clear the firewall with some persuasion from the come-along. VERY SECURE jack stands are a must (or a lift ).

jbaj007, i couldnt get the link to work for me

and thanks for the help, guys...theres a reason i always ask my questions here first...if i cant fix it myself, im always educated before i take it to someone....i cant just go to a mechanic and say,"whats this? can you fix it for me?" gotta be armed when you go into battle
