Now I understand the term thread

Hi
I talked to three mechanics yesterday. Tony, the local guy said that it was probably the smoking glow plug, or me leaving the key on too long. He thinks it may be a fuse or a poorly connected glow plug. He is also going to do a compression test AFTER he adjusts the valves. the first mechanic didn't adjust the valves, otherwise he would have charged me, which he didn't. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the 'thread' advice.

That is certainly good news. Sounds like you are on the right track with the new fellow.

We definitely like to keep a thread going, and bring it to a conclusion, rather than start another one. Everybody can look back and see the entire history of the problem, and, sometimes provide a fresh pair of eyes and a proper solution.

You have enough toys.
I offer $300.00 USD and a case of bubble gum.

It sounds like a sweet car...

the little red one

I don't ever want to sell it. I'll just keep it and look at it. It's nearly perfect, except that it doesn't run. the interior and exterior look like new. Only the sunroof doesn't work, but I'll deal with that once it's running.
thanks
Janet

Dumb question, but I am gonna ask any way:

Can you get a one of these to start/run with out the glow plugs? Would plugging in the block heater creat enough heat to get them to start with out glow plugs, if the tempature outside was 50 or so degrees???

I've started my '82 240D at 70 degrees without the glowplugs, but it took some cranking.

If you have a healthy engine (good comp, good fuel, mobil1 helps too) you should be able to fire it off at any temp over about 50*F w/ a bit of cranking. In fact, that's a test I usually tried on any MB diesel that I was interested in purchasing. My old n/a wagon had almost no blow-by and would fire off on a warm day w/o glowing (crank for 20sec or less depending on temp) every time.
Never shouda sold her....

Is it safe to crank the car for 20+ seconds without glowing the engine?

it takes you 20 seconds in cold weather? How cold? The coldest it's gotten here is 30 degrees or so and my 300D barely cranked for a second then fired up.

Warm day

After reading that you guys can start your Mercedes without glow plugs, I confidently went out on a warm playoff day, (70 degrees) and tried to start the car. I gave up after about 10 minutes. It just turned over and over and over, but no cigar. The mechanic is going to look at it this afternoon.
