OTOH, while I know how to flush my coolant, I may not want to do it because of the spillage issues. However, when I do bring it into a shop, I have an idea of what needs to be done so there are no issues of it going hog wild.

Change pre-filter

The pre-filter doesn't always look bad when it is clogged. I've changed plenty of them as I've been running WVO blends for 9 months. They're cheap and can be changed with nothing but a Phillips screwdriver in 5 minutes. Loosen the 2 clamps, pull out the old filter while holding a finger on one end to keep the fuel in. Tip it up and you can see the dirt inside. Fill the new filter with clean fuel, and install. This filter can definitely cause your symptom. The spin-on filter is easy to change too.

Oh, Mr. Aklim, come over here, I want to show you something that is seriously wrong with your car and needs to be addressed immediately........................

A lot of people that hang out here actually like to work on their cars, and the only real way you can sleep at night is if you make sure it's done right, and do it yourself. Owning a car like mine is like having an opportunity to beat the American consumerist system in a sense, because you can literally do just about everything yourself. That's the beauty in it, and the fun too. I feel good whenever I can beat the system. A lot of people out there have to poop out $300+/month for a rapidly depreciating piece of machinery, plus extra for maintenance, and I know there are some issues that aren't covered by warranty. I got a Mercedes cheap, no payments, I'll have it forever because I can turn a wrench, and the thing can't depreciate any more unless it catches on fire or something. The only problem is boredom. Kinda like the way living forever would be boring. I have wandering eyes for other cars, but that's a slippery slope.

Yes, I do work on the car myself. However, sometimes certain circumcisions prevent me from doing so. For instance, when my oil needed changing, a job I have done too many times, and my pelvis was fractured, I brought it in. Other times I have brought stuff in was when I lived in the apartments and it was too cold to do it outside. I didn't always have a warm garage to work in.

As a rule, I bring it in for a trusted mechanic to work when I find that the job is too big to do in the garage. Some things you just have to bite the bullet. That or if I don't have the tools and I can't see spending money buying a tool I will need once in 20 years. Also, it pays to know mechanics that do work on the side.

I don't just drop off the car. I am next to the tech when they work on it. I query the procedure and make sure it is done within certain parameters. I also bring the parts there.

Sorry but that's funny. You spelled the word right but it's the wrong word. Let me guess English is your second language

And that procedure in likely even more painful than the aforementioned walletectomy!!! And I thought it was a one time thing.

I hope not. It is all I speak besides certain choice phrases. Just something from one of my old classes where the girl asks about a "circumcised triangle" instead of a circumscribed triangle or something to that effect.

I am fully capable of changing them. I just do not have the time or the place right now to do it. It is below freezing and snowing constantly. I had MB change the filters because it was easier for me. Luckily it was just the filters that needed changed. I will drain the tank and clean or change the tank screen MYSELF. You guys are likely to piss people off with those "we help people who help themselves" comments. I come here for the sheer knowlege and experience you guys have with these cars... but thank you for the help up until those comments.

Did I say that? Yes, I believe that I did say that. And, the more I think about it, the more it is true.

We like to help people who will fix the vehicle on their own, without spending lots of money at the dealer. The dealer is a place where people dispose of money. This forum is the opposite; a place where people will save money.

So, if I piss anybody off when I make the statement that "we are all pleased to help people who will help themselves", then, I suppose such people will not return here and will go to the dealer.

So be it.

You probably dont need to mess with tank filter or drain tank unless your filters stop up again real soon i.e next few weeks or so.

I would concur. The fuel tank screen is very course. The stuff that tends to clog the secondary filter is often like mud. I am glad that new filters fixed you up.

Question Why the stress?

If the owner wants to paint it pink, green and yellow diagonal stripes, run the engine on gallons of paint instead of diesel, add holes with a shotgun or take it to the dealer that is their right.
Please consider how it sounded from the other side.
Have a great day.

I see both sides its just that the consensus here is that the site is for people wanting more info on their vehicles and not just to say "I need a walletectomy" Changing fuel filters in the bitter cold is what you get for not doing some easy preventative maintenance before it turns cold(whether you diy or not)

Ive just learned that you shouldnt post "I dont know what the problem is Ill just let a mechanic fix it" is not a good line to use on a predominatly DIY board.
