220D to buy or not to buy??? any hits??

I was driving down the road the other day and saw a `69 220D for sale. The car is cream in color and has red interior. There is a few rust spots on the car, but nothing major. The car was inspected was last year, and runs out next month (PA inspection). I haven't heard the car run, but the guy did stuff to it to pass inspection, he said brake lines, lights, exhaust....stuff like that. Its a 4 speed with AC, has crank windows. He wants $3,000.00 for the car. I have never owned a 115 MB, two 114's, I enjoy the body lines on them (i have a 280C, very nice) So i'm basicly asking if the car is worth it. I looked it up in a book I own and it goes for about that. I have seen the one on ebaymotors. Thanks guys, love the site.

I'd go for it.

Keep in mind, a 240D will kick it's butt for speed. It takes some very defensive driving to make it work as a driver.

Make sure to take it for a drive before even thinking about placing $1 in the sellers hands.

$3000?

I've got a '71 220D that I use as my daily driver. I think its been a great car . . . real, real slow. But you get used to it. I think the car would have to be in awesome shape to be worth $3000, and with the rust spots you described I doubt that. I paid $1750 for mine, about 6 years ago. It had 90K actual miles, but the engine was a factory rebuild at 60K. It had no rus, everything worked, even the original Becker!

I gave $50 for mine, but it was awfully rough. 8^)

I'd pass at $3k... maybe let it sit for a while and offer $1500 or so if you really like it. I don't think it'll sell at $3k. For what it's worth, I had to GIVE mine away... it was a rough project -- too much for me to handle at the time -- so Jim from IN (the guy who parts out MBs in the parts forum) came after it and presumably parted it out.

Neat cars, but they don't seem to be worth much but to us few Diesel-Benzophiles.

Chris
