i didn't trade but i had bought a nice used 91 BMW while my 300sdl was in intensive care. Headgasket blew on the BMW and i had to drive my sick 300SDL. the 300SDL lasted 3 months on a bad transmission and it changed my view on my Big Baby (thats what i call my benz). i learned that a Benz is not just a car but a machine. after i got my transmission fixed (and a couple of minor things) i knew it would be a cold day in hell before i ever get rid of her or leave her in intensive care again.

sorry to hear of your lost.

Here's how it went. I called, asked how much. "Oh, what's your number, I'll have to look into it and call you back." Me, I'd rather not and all that, but if you do call back, leave a message. He leaves message, tells me to call him back. Great. "Are you looking at paying cash or financing." Me cash, but would financing be cheaper. "Oh no, cash is good. Oh man, the previous owner would kill me if he found this out, but I'll let the car go for $8000. It's a really nice car." Me, that's too much for my blood. "What were you thinking?" Me, less that that. "What, like $5000 or something?" Me, thinking to myself that I don't like this guy, at all, so I say, less than that (although 5K is a good price, but he might be using that to scoff at me, who knows, I don't want to find out.) Conversation kinda dies and I tell him good luck.

Maybe I'll call next week and see about the 5K price, but I really just didn't want to deal with that guy.

Typical used car dealer. Puts up a ridiculous starting price in the hope that he can negotiate to a price in the middle somewhere (maybe $6500. or so).

Just let the car sit there for four to six weeks or so. It's not going anywhere at that price.

Than go back and offer him $5K again.

Talk to Tom about what it has in it and what it still needs. It might be worth a bit more than $5K.

Well, we know that he gave Tom less than 5K for it. We need to find out how much less. If he gave 4K for it, it would be possible to buy it for 5.5K.

I'd like to have a little fun with this *********.

Hattie, Stephen, and I, and some others who know the vehicle and might want to partake in this fun could each call him up, every couple of days and inquire about the vehicle. When he $8K, we can say, no, that's way too much. We are thinking about $5K.

If we get enough people to do it, and we continue this process for about three weeks, our "friend" is going to get to thinking the vehicle is not worth anything near $8K.

Then, bbeardb, you could go there in person and take it for $5.5K, presuming that you want this vehicle.

Anybody game?

See if you can find the trade in price. Armed with that go in and tell him you know the guy who traded it and will give him $1k-$1.5k more then what the dealer paid for it. Let it sit for a few weeks, no one is going to buy it.

Lowball him and tell him it's worth 4K, make him think he made a mistake on the trade. Personally, I don't really want to spend more than 4K on a car, but could probably be persuaded up to 5K if it's a really nice example and there's not much work to do to it. I'm looking at 4k vehicles right now, but then figure in travel expense, time off from work, and all that, the price adds up. Texas isn't so far away though. I could drive there and back in a weekend and avoid the plane ticket and taking work off.

Unfortunatley, I don't know too much about Tom's car. It was black, he got it from FL, put 5.5K into it. Under 200K on the clock. That's about it. I wish I could've bought it from him before he traded it in

I'm in the market for an SDL. My eye has been wadering to the 87 300D though. But this could happen.

If anything, it could be fun to laugh at a dealer a few time. We all seem to like to make fun of them on this forum!

Well, the first step is to talk with Tom and find out whether this vehicle is for you, or not. See what repairs have been done to it. See what the dealer paid for it. Determine what the vehicle is worth, to you.

Then, we can determine if it is worthwhile to play a little game on this dealer.
