I can easily arrange for you to have a low mileage W123 diesel in the same colors and interior that you currently have.

Just take the cluster out and send it to me. When you get it back, it will then be a very low mileage W123. Cost is minimal.

With what this guy expects to get from this car you would think he could fix the overheating problem before someone sets off on a cross country trip in the middle of winter to drive it home.............Having that thing cook over in a remote stretch of road in sub freezing weather would be life threatening.

And, if you survived with it, it could then become life threatening for the seller.

I have been meaning to inquire about it and the opportunity hasn't presented itself until now but isn't that "Michael Bolton" from Office Space when they beat the heck out of their dysfunctional faxmachine with a baseball bat?

From the way it was described, it's likely that it simply was a little low on coolant and an air pocket was preventing the thermostat from opening, witnessed by it working correctly ever since. This assumes that it was described correctly by the seller.

Maybe its really a nightmare to have one.
When the engine is worn out, a rebuild will give you a like new engine (better than low mileage ) for less money.

Oh I forgot to mention one more thing. The seller mentioned to me in the last email that the trap had been replaced under a recall.
The thing though that bothered me was the car seemed too slow.

You can always verify the recall by calling MBUSA with the VIN number...

That car should be faster than both your 300DT and your 230CE. The 300DT has more weight for the same amount of power, while the 230CE has just a little bit more horsepower than it has and much less torque. If it feels slower than those cars then something is wrong somewhere. Perhaps the valves need adjustment.

$8000.00, with 10 hours left. Any more guesses as to what it'll go for?

$10,000 maybe?

I would never buy a car like this off ebay. I would go their in person and talk to them then have two good shops that know these cars go over it. Before I spend that kind of money on a "mint" car I want two views.

Besides a 100k 300D can become a 50k 300D with a simple odo change. Look at Brian C for example he paid good money for a nice 300SDL with low mileage. Now it probably just has average mileage on it. I would never trust the odo's on these old cars.

On what evidence do you base this? That's a pretty serious allegation.

The thing that amazes me in some of these auctions is the amount of bidding activity. Yes, I know that shill bidding can take place, but I'll go out on a limb here and guess that at least some of those are real people bidding, in at least some of the auctions.

To me, the only "smart" reasons to bid early in an auction would be

1) to kill a "Buy It Now" option (in hopes of winning it at a lower price), and

2) to demonstrate interest in the item (some sellers will pull auctions before close if they don't see the sort of action they'd like).

Other than those, I see no point in bidding early and duking it out with other bidders. Figure out what you're willing to pay, and drop the bomb (if you think it's big enough) near the auction close. Why let other people decide for you how much you're willing to pay?

Some of these folks just may not understand how eBay works. Others may simply get a kick out of doing it this way (Look! I'm "winning"! Whee!).

Any other ideas?
