E300TD diesel purge proceedure solved! (pictures, mpeg)

I came up with a pretty easy proceedure for running diesel purge through my 99 E300TD. Here are 5 pictures and a mpeg2 movie clip. If you watch the clip, pay attention to the sound of the motor as the diesel purge begins to work. (you may right click, save target as..)

I don't have a 99 E300, but I was just wondering how did you cap off your lines from the fuel tank to prevent fuel from spilling all over the floor?

Once you hook up the lines as shown, the IP is isolated from the tank. There is no external or in-tank fuel pump on this car. You might want to make sure the tank is not completely full. (if you had a e300td that is)

The simple answer is you don't have to cap off the supply and return lines. I did however spend a few hours learning how the fuel system draws through the filter assembly. I hooked clear plastic lines to the car's fuel system and submerged them in a can of diesel so I could see how the system worked. The fuel in the disconnected lines actually drains back to the level of the fuel tank.

The intake fitting for my filter canister is quite simple. I used an old fuel line I had laying around but you could use the one that is already there. Remove it and turn it around. Remember you have to PUSH IN the little white clips on the fuel line fittings to get them to release.

As for the return line, just remove the hose clamp on the black fuel line and pull it off the barb and attach your clear plastic line.

I have a '98 e300TD. There is only one line attaching to the input of the prefuel filter. I am a bit leary of pulling of the clear plastic line from the black nipple that is there. Any suggestions?

You want to remove the bolt and metal keeper that holds the fuel line into the top of the fuel filter housing then remove the fuel line. If you notice in the picture, the existing fuel line is still there. It's just moved out of the way. I used an old fuel line with the correct end on it and re-attached it to the filter inlet. If you do not have an extra fuel line around with the correct end on it, then you may remove the other end of the existing fuel line and turn it around. That fuel line is in a vaccum under normal conditions so no fuel will run out. Make sure your tank is 1/2 full or less.

I don't have an extra fuel line (and I don't have the connector to sit on top of the pre-fuel filter.)

So I would reach under the manifold to the other end of the clear plastic exisiting line and pop it off of whatever it is attached to?, then spin the line and the black plastic part on top of the fuel filter around 180? Then connct the temporary line to the exisiting line end to end?

How do you happen have a spare fuel line with the proper end to sit on the pre fuel filter ?

I have. Nailing pretty good at startup, smoothed our and quiet 0:45 into the movie. Lubro Moly should be paying you to advertise like this :sun_smile

My 300SD took about 3-4 minutes to quiet down...I was surprised, but pleased that it did....

Then I started hearing other repetative noises....but it's great to have some power again.....
