Torque converter seal leak
Ok.. I'm going to look at an '83 300DT today with a transplanted '85 300DT engine in it (no trap cat).
The seller tells me that there is a slight leak in the torque converter seal. How big a deal is that to repair? I imagine that the transmission has to come off to do it. I've looked at the car, but haven't heard it run or looked inside (I've peered through windows). Overall the car sounds like its in good shape.. 130k on the motor, leveling system in good condition. Decent interior, 3rd seat, luggage rack w crossmembers on top. Other than the obvious other types of issues with a 20+yo car in general, the seal concerns me. But he's only asking $2,200. So it might be worth it. Assuming I can convince my wife we need another MB

For 2,200, would that leave you any cash left over to go through the tranny and fix up the seal (perhaps even just R&R the whole thing?
It does sound like a decent deal for a car with working leveling system, and whatnot. How many miles on the engine? The car? Besides, good deals on Wagons are slimming down... |

The money is not really that much of an issue. Since likely I would wind up selling one of the 300D's. And yeah, I'd likely go ahead and take a good look at the entire tranny while I had it out.
He says the milleage on the engine is 130k. I didn't think to ask about that car. But I suppose I'll see the odo tonight and when I call I'll ask if its acurate.

In all fairness, I wouldn't worry about a slight leak there. If you have it out though, it's easy enough to change. It took me no more than 10 minutes to change that seal, and that's because I spent most of that time making a tool out of an old spoon (really)

You can do a tourqe converter seal in 10 minutes? I gotta see this. The transmission has to come out to do that you know. You're having a rough day aren't you Pete.

Well I was stood up. The owner said his daughter would be there to show me the car. She was not.
However, the odo says 220k. The car is sitting level and not listing or anything. And the back end seems tight. Its not spongy. The interior is in decent shape. Save the rear door cover (missing), the leatherique part that the rear dome light goes in (also missing), dashboard looks like the surface of the moon. The interior is possibly tobacco. Sort of a ruddish reddish brown. Actually quite ugly on a light yellow/tan body. I'll try again to drive it tomorrow.

That looks like the color of the interior. Which in that condition and not looking through cruddy windows actually looks pretty good.
Hopefully I'll be able to get inside it today. Although I think I may have already talked myself out of the car. Or was it the wife talked me out of the car. Hmm..

I don't know what the 123 wagon market is like in FL, but in CA it is hot. That car would probably be gone for that price with no dickering. The dickerer would go home without a car. The 83 with all the upgrades over the 82, the priceless luggage bars, and the third seat make that a desireable car. Even 220k on the clock is good. My only cocern is how the vacuum control systems on the engine were handled. There were considerable modificationd in 85. I would have that part checked professionally.

I'm not sure what the market around here for wagons is. I do know that since last June when I got infected by my first diesel, I haven't seen one for sale around here.
So its pretty much down to wether I want to buy it for his price or not. We've already discussed it and the price isn't negociable. Mostly because the car isn't really on the market (ie no add, no for sale signs). I just drive past it every day and left a note asking if he wanted to sell it. Just called him to try and re-arrange a chance to drive it. I asked him about the missing interior parts. He claims he's got them. So perhaps I haven't talked myself out of it now. I just didn't relish trying to track down mahagony interior parts for a wagon (if thats the color it is)
