Question Runs better COLD ??

My 1984 300D runs better, read that as smoother, when the engine temp is cold. When at temp my engine has a pronounced shake. Your head seems to nod yes when at idle. I have ruled out mounts and shocks, engine wise, because logic would seem to dictate that it would shake whether hot or cold. Is this maybe the rack dampner bolt??? Any ideas would be great....Thanx!!

same problem

I had the identical problem in my 1982 300sd. I replaced the rack dampener bolt with an upgraded stronger version - Bosch and no longer have the shakes. Running 2 cans of diesel purge through the engine after this helped too. I think it made the adjustment of the bolt more accurate since all that crud was gone. Between the two maintenance issues, the car has no shake.

Mine was also much more pronounced as the engine got hotter and ran longer.

In general, an engine that runs worse hot has injector issues. Could also be the fuel rack damper. Adjust that first. But you may have an injector that is malfunctioning. Try some diesel purge and if that don't work you may have a candidate for injector rebuild. Although few have recieved anything better in return there.

Thumbs up aka

Is the rack dampner also known as : Governor Idle Pin, as listed in FastLane?

Thanx again guys...

I have done many diesel purges.... And replaced my injectors with faulty Indian rebuilds.

If you are not absolutely sure that your injectors are clean, start there. If you take them to a shop they will want to replace the nozzles, it is a knee jerk reaction. Run some searches and learn to clean them yourself. Adjust the valves and check your compression while you are at it. Read, you will see.

I experiment with alternative fuels and clog my fuel system on a regular basis, it is fun for now. When an injector starts clogging the engine runs exactly as you describe. It does that when a filter starts clogging also.

The rack damper bolt is $40 or $50. If you don't mind that you can't hurt anything by replacing it. That money would go a long way toward getting your injectors in top shape.

Also the rack damper adjustment is not a one-time, set it and forget it fix. If you set it and it smooths out your idle it does not prove that your injectors were clean. It is a compensator, that is what it does. Later when you do clean your injectors you may need to adjust it again, maybe back out.

Anyway, my point is that there may be some superstition surrounding the great and powerful rack damper bolt. Make sure you have the fundamentals covered before you put the cherry on top.

BTW, I recently cleaned the screen in my fuel tank. I would do it to my next diesel the first time the tank was empty. I will do it on a regular basis in the future. At least once a year, maybe two years.
