How's your traction in snow???
I'm delighted that my 124, it's first use in winter, is exceptional in snow for a rear wheel drive car!
I've always used the Volvo during the winter because it has always done well in the snow, but this year it's heater core gave out a month ago and now I use the 87 300 D.....................good snow car! How about the 123's and 126's???? BB |

123 with snow tires, ok, -126 with snow tires, not good to wretched.

300DT, no snow tires, pretty darn good. I don't see why father always complained(and got stuck). Still holds no candle to an A1 VW diesel in the wet white stuff though..

My SDL is nothing to write home about. Would it have broken the bank for them to put an LSD in the rear? Come on MB. As long as I avoid stopping on hills and don't go through snow deep snow I am fine.

Big bite snow tires (old school) and 100 lbs in the trunk and you can't even do a doughnut

The SDL's handling is very predictable. I'll second Hatterasguy's sentiments about an LSD though. It would greatly improve the car's ability on low traction surfaces.

I second that about the W126's having predictable handling. The rear end will often slide I bit in turns but it is easy to control. Nothing like driving on hard packed snow to make the SDL a little tail happy.
So thats what 800hp on dry roads feels like!

126 in snow
1990 350sdl with Nokian snows all around, much better than I would have expected. Way better than my BMW 735i. We got a bit of snow last weekend here in the NY area and I got to try out my new Nokians on the SDL. For a big rear wheel drive lunk( the car, not me) it goes fairly well.

I've only slid off the road once. I was lucky there was no curb or ground projections. I just came to a complete stop and drove right back onto the road.

How about icy conditions?
I've read many statements about the 87 300d having good traction in snow so can only suspect that it's the icy conditions up here that are causing me problems.
Even with studs, as soon as the turbo starts up the back tires start spinning. No, I am not a lead foot.....at least not all the time. I too believe that a limited slip rear would be great, anyone know about the availability of such a thing for us? Glen Stuck in the perpetual freeze/thaw cycle of the Anchorage bowl. |
