Kwik Trip in lake mills, Wi. in white knuckle driving conditions. The only other issue I have ever had filling up is people letting me know that i was putting in diesel. I have also been asked if i get 50 mpg. I tell them I sometimes get 50 miles per 2 gallons.

Am I making a safe bet that diesels aren't nearly as popular in the US as they are in Canada? It seems here that many people expect an older Mercedes to be a diesel.
I get stange looks once in a while when someone actually clues in to the diesel Sonoma, but with the diesel Jetta's I've owned, I never had anyone look sideways at them.

I kind of enjoy the novelty of going to a large truck stop for fuel, and being the only car, surrounded by all the semis, dump trucks, delivery vans, etc.....

There is this one place that I regularly go to for fuel....they have consistently good prices....but there are only two diesel pumps in the "cars only" area, surrounded by gas pumps, and I often have to wait for someone to move. I get the same wierd looks that someone talked about in an earlier post....People give me that "why aren't you going to the other pumps?" look. hahaha...

I've never had anyone try to tell me that I was putting the "wrong" fuel in the car....but people do strike up conversations about the car....especially whem I'm in the SD....They say how great it looks for "such an old car", or "really, it's a diesel?", or "It has HOW MANY MILES on it?!?!"

I also enjoy telling people that it could run on practically anything, in a pinch......french-fry oil, transmission fluid, peanut oil, motor oil, olive oil, kerosene, hemp oil, power steering fluid.......

It's always surprising how little most people know about diesels, and even fewer people know about the whole biodiesel/WVO thing....

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I have a question that is of a fuel-related nature....Do any of you 116 owners have trouble with the diesel fuel foaming and creeping up the filler neck, and making the fuel pump nozzle shut off prematurely? I have to fill the tank on my 300SD by hand, at about 1/3 of the full delivery speed of the pump, to prevent it from foaming up and tripping the automatic shut-off. This is not an issue with either of my 123s...I can just set the lock on the nozzle and walk away to check my oil or whatever. It must have something to do with the geometry of the filler neck, or inadequate ventilation for the tank?..... Anyone else have experience with this?

Mike

Unfortunately, you're right....but that appears to be SLOWLY changing. I see more and more diesel-powered cars being sold and driven in the past couple of years.

Where I live, at least, a lot of people DO know that diesel engines were common in 70s/80s era Mercedes cars....There's a lot of them in the metro Atlanta area, especially 123s. They don't die prematurely of car cancer (rust) here in the south, so there's quite a few of them around.

Interestingly, I was talking cars with a guy one day, and he said, "You mean Mercedes made versions of these cars that were NOT diesels?" hahaha..... He was serious.....For some reason, he thought they were ALL diesels!

Oldsmobile 5.7 diesels were notorious for foam in the filler neck. When I got my 123 I was surprised that there was no foam problem. I always blamed it on the high pressure at the pump but after reading your post I think you might have something with the geometry of the neck. Either that or maybe they have some sort of baffle system in there that aeriates the fuel.

I have that problem filling my 126 with the pumps at speedway, their pumps are real fast! So it foams up after about 7 gallons, then I have to wait a second, then slowly fill it the rest of the way.

Yeah, it's a pain in the a$$, eh?

I've also noticed that some pumps have a much more sensitive auto shut-off than others.

Your wife is a diesel guy? I'm in Madison, WI. While I believe that if they could export Political Corectness, they'd make a fortune, I am pretty sure that they don't allow guys to marry other guys.

my school buses foam in the tank. it is both the 50 and 100 gal tanks. the bigger tanks usually shut off at 25 gal when there is 10 gal more. the little ones at 15 for 25. we keep being told to not top off and i told the re-fueler that there is room for extra gas but you have to watch and listen. its a pia to refuel /o day so i take my time and make those behind me wait.

My wife's Chevy Cavalier and my previous to MB Ford Focus have it on passenger side. All my previous VW's of course also. The only cars that mix me up at the pumps is when I have to rent a Chrysler.
