Adventures at the Diesel Pump...
I had a dump truck driver cuss me out and call me an a$$ hole for filling up my MB 300D at the diesel pump last week. He felt the need to pull so his bumper actually was ABOVE mine and 2 inches from my deck lid. I think he wanted to beat my A$$. The viens were sticking out of his neck and everything. Then he reached for the nosle to stretch it out to reach his tank and realised it was in my filler hole. Next thing he was listening to the idle. then he had a sheepish look and got back in his truck and backed up two feet. He would't make eye contact after that.
We know what happens when we assume...

some people are just complete idiots. I pay no attention to people like that. He prbably thought that your MB wasnt a diesel......
You should have left him a nice cloud of sooty exhaust fumes when you left the station..... lol

I usually have the opposite problem.........I go to the only (second pump ahsn't been fixed tin the last 6 months) diesel pump at my local servo (largest servo in southern hemisphere when it opened a few years ago) and there is always someone filling up with petrol blocking the pump.
I just sit behind them waiting for them to leave and they keep giving me wierd looks because the 30 odd other pumps are empty yet i sit waiting to fill up where they are. I only ever get angry when they aren't getting fuel and refuse to move to the carpark instead.

My problem at the pump
The station I fill up at other customers are always warning me not to do that that’s diesel fuel when I fuel my w116 300sd but for some reason never when I fill the w123. It has always puzzled me as to why this is almost always an issue with the w116. They always look shocked when I tell them it takes diesel or used kitchen grease and we usually end up in a short conversation about the merits of diesel power and if I am serious about running it on grease.

I have never had any bad expierences in my MB diesel either, but I realise that there are idiots out there. lol.
One funny thing did happen to me though. I was filling up my fuel tank at a local QuikTrip. After I got the tank full, I went in to pay. I told the cashier that I got $20 on pump #2. She looks out the window at pump 2, and sees my '83 300D out there. She then pays attention to the fact that I am paying for diesel fuel. I easily spent 10 minutes trying to convince her that MB actually put diesel engines into their passenger cars. She thought it was pretty cool that a car like mine runs on diesel.

I don't know why my experiences are so much different than anyone else's but in 5 years of owning my diesel I have never had anyone say something to me at the diesel pump.

I've only had minor things like that happen, I don't go inside anymore (I charge right at the pump now usually) I went in to pay and said #13, so the cashier looks at me and says...."the mercedes out there????" I said..."yeah......" So she stared out the window at it for a second....then into her security camera thing....looking puzzled....then just gave me my change. Haha. I don't think she was believing what I had just filled it with.

Now if I could just break the habit of waiting for glow plug light when firing up the Magnum. At least I haven't tried to fill it with diesel.

Anybody know why Mercedes puts the fuel filler on the wrong side of the car? I ofter have to go "against the flow" at the service station because the filler is on the passenger side.

I think it's a German or Euro thing, my '91 Jetta had it on the passenger side, and the new VW's do as well.

Germans put the filling point at the farthest point from the driver. It is a safety thing I think.
