In the past, someone mentioned that soapy water and rice (brown or white ) did the trick. Fill it up, put on a little rumba or salsa music, and shake.

On older diesels, the taillight/brakelight lens on the same side as the tailpipe (driver's side on my SD) tailpipe is almost always dimmer. Over many years of use, the diesel soot coats the lens, inside and out, and blocks the light. A good cleaning will make a very noticeable difference difference. Or one can use a replacement lens from a non-diesel car of the same chassis/body design.
