Yipes I guess I am glad I have a non turbo
I saw this picture of engine in Steve's 84 300D that is listed in the classifieds and wow there is a lot more linkages, blackboxes and stuff that I'm glad is not in my wagon. The only ALDA I want to see in on the TV series MASH...

Hey Bill,
Do you have a picture of your linkages? I still have never seen a picture of a car with the same setup as my '80 300TD. I know mine aren't adjusted correctly, but don't really know how to procede. I got a new/used 3/2 valve, but it was bad, so I may have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. JL |
The turbo, itself, adds very little to the control system for the engine. Most everything that you see in the photo has nothing to do with the turbo. There is the ALDA and the overboost protection valve and the line from the banjo bolt at the rear of the manifold, but, that's about it.
All those linkages are related to the operation of the IP, the cruise control, and the vacuum switches on the top of the valve cover. |

Jimmy,
I took some photos of my linkage. You can find it here: http://community.webshots.com/album/262019459ljhYQF?382 Let me know if you need any other views. |

All this stuff seems intimidating but it really isn't. Once you have it set-up right you don't need to touch it again. I'm glad I have a '84 wagen. I love the 125 hp, which helps here in NJ since 99% of the drivers are always in a rush. It helps me keep up with traffic and even surprise a few unexpecting dreamers when they can't keep up with my 20 year old wagen. Louis. |
I'll post a pic of my SD tomorrow. It is simpler than both of the ones you have shown already. It is running an intake/exhaust manifold from a '79 model:).

WOW,
Bill, when I need info on how my jalopy wagon should be, I now know who to contact! Your's is the first linkage "package" that is like mine. When you get time (no rush here) would you mind telling me where the vac lines coming off your 3/2 valve go? I have one plugged like yours, but I don't have a 'Y' coming off of it. Your throttle linkage are exactly the same as mine also. But my heater hoses are all over hell's half acre compared to yours. Many questions... I REALLY appreciate the pics you posted! Jimmy L |
I wouldn't buy a na diesel, I want the power and economy the turbo engines deliver. Besides even the much more complex turbo 606's are simple engines. A turbo 617 is about as simple as engines get.

One vacuum line runs directly to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. The other runs to the top of the valve mounted on the IP. The valve on the IP regulates how much vacuum the modulator sees. |
