grommet surrounding A/C hose at firewall is leaking...
 

Well, there is a grommet that surrounds two A/C hoses where they enter the passenger cabin above the brake pedal. Looking at the one installed on the car, to do the job properly, one would have to remove BOTH of the A/C hoses-obviously discharging the system-to get the new grommet on.

Should I just fill the area around it perhaps with silicon? I considered maybe buying another grommet but I don't want the A/C work involved. If I were to maybe cut a slash in it allowing the hoses to slip into their respective locations would that leak? I really don't want to have to do this job twice as I think I'm going to need to remove the booster for the job.

Until you can replace the grommet go to a paint jobber, a supplier of automotive paints, and buy some 3M ribbon chaulk, mold it around the gasket and it will hold the water out. This is whats used on american cars to seal just about any opening.

"silicon" might be sorta hard to get in there (depending on its form...sand, glass, chips) and "silicone" will just induce rust. I would go with the putty idea..that stuff is down and dirty but it does the job.
Is your system r134 yet or the old stuff?

There are a wide variety of caulks available.. ask your local 3M representative for some literature on them.
I would go for a combo fix... find the correct grommet, take out the old one and clean the area.... then neatly cut it and install it around the hose using sealer when installing. Put the cut facing the bottom of course.
Automotive Urethane comes in tubes also... like used for installing windshields... if you are worried about Sillycone.

The grommets are leaking what, water? Body grommets are designed to prevent chafing and may sometimes incidentally be waterproof. Why not just clean out the drains so the water doesn't get that high in the first place?

The piece is a rubber grommet. It has a lip to it where it "grabs" the firewall. It's leaking water because it's flaked off where it grips the large A/C hose, as in pieces of it have gotten brittle and broken off. Right now I have a shop rag stuffed around it, but that's obviously temporary.
