best way to jack up rear of a 123

I have searched the forum without finding a good answer to my question:

What is the best way of jacking and supporting the rear end of a 123? I am going to drain and fill the differential. I have a hydraulic craftsman jack and jack stands. Is it ok to just lift using the hydraulic jack under the diff and putting the stands under the side lift points?

Yes but I would put the jack stands under the frame, not the diff.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think that the differential and rear axle is supposed to be in the driving position in order to get the oil level right. I do mine without jacking it up. A drive on lift would work too. I'm not sure that lifting the differential up would give you the proper fill.

I would use ramps, otherwise I would jack each side up individually with the factory jack and place the jackstands where the rear axle carrier bolts to the frame, which is directly behind the jack holes. It's nice and flat and the stands will sit securely against it. Whatever you do, don't place the stands under the rocker panels. I would think it better to do the change while the vehicle is level, though.

When in doubt, fill to capacity specs.

Thanks. I used ramps and then jacked up the front on stands. Got it almost level.
