car won't start; sputters briefly then cuts off (ran out of diesel)

i recently posted a thread about how a car audio professional drilled a hole in my fuel tank by mistake. well, i ran out of diesel last night...but my "R" light never lit up. i'm assuming that when the new fuel tank was installed, they did something wrong (it worked just fine until that new tank was put in). i am now faced with the problem of just getting the car started. i had to have it towed, even after i put a gallon of diesel in it. this afternoon, i tried using the primer pump, but all i got was a bunch of diesel squirting everywhere. i read on these forums that the model of primer pump that's on my car (the white one) is notorious for this. the thing is, when i changed the fuel filters last week, i was able to prime it partially, and then get it started by cranking the engine for 5 or so seconds. today when i tried cranking it (which i did for a good 8 seconds) it kind of sputtered, the oil presssure gauge was all the way up; i guess you could say that it ran for a few seconds, because when i turned it off and took the key out, it continued to sputter for about 3 or 4 more seconds. what do you guys make of all this?

Jacrouch.

Keep cranking until you hear it catching on a
few cylinders and it should run.
You can easily crank these babies for 20+ secs.
Heck, when mine('84 300td) has been sitting for
a few days in below 25* and it warms up to above
freezin, I need to crank it for 45-50 secs before it
starts to run.

Louis.

PS: Update your primer pump soon, it can leave you
stranded.

thanks
i ordered a new primer pump and cranked the hell out of my car. the battery actually died, so i jumped it with some heavy duty cables. it took a loooong time...probably didn't help that it was just above freezing outside
