The black box you are referring to is the EGR control module. It uses a rack position sensor in the pump (the wires in question) to determine when to open the valve via the vacuum controls.

Unhappy injection pump

thanx forthe info.....i bought the 1985 turbo wagon not running. i replaced the glow plug except #3(broken from the inside) and also the glow plug relay. i loosened the injector plug connection and fuel comes out. i also replaced the glow plugs, still no luck, we couldn't make it too start. a little bit of white smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe. we even adjusted the valves, plus we installed a large new battery that we keep fully charged all the time. according to the previous owner, one morning it just wouldn;t start, we did find the air filter totally plugged up- it was very black(light barely goew thru it). any ideas guys?? greatly appreciate any help.. thinking of removing the head, i don't know.....thanx .....john

From the comments you made about the air filter, it sounds like no maintenance has been done in quite a while. The nice thing about diesel is it is fuel or air. Since it is cranking good, I would suspect fuel. Changed fuel filters? Checked filter screen? Are you using fresh fuel?
