300 D motor help

I have a 82 300d with 205,000 miles and I am going to swap motor into an 83 with 800,000 miles would it be good to overaul engine or just comp. test it then but in other car?

If your engine has had normal maintenance and no catastrophic events like overheating or losing its oil you may have 100 to 200 Thousand more useful miles from it before it would need overhauling. If you really want a rebuilt engine in your new car then certainly doing the work while it is out between them is easy on the back and eyes and knuckles.

how does this engine run? What are the compression values? You need to know this first. Having a rebuilt engine is a wonderful thing, but it's many hours of work and quite a bit of expense. It cost me about $2k doing 95% of it myself. If you don't have the turbo, the pistons are cheaper. If you do, you'll spend a lot more than the $675 I spent 2 years ago. If it runs well, and the compression is OK, I recommend you use it without rebuilding it. But you should at least clean it off well, check the valve and IP timing and do what's necessary to make it nice while the access is easy.

If you don't rebuild, it would be a good idea to replace all the seals and gaskets. Especially the upper pan gasket and rear main seal, both of which require engine removal. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check chain stretch before installing the engine, either.
