Crazy transmission problem
Lately the transmission in my '85 300D has been acting up. This car is a dreaded CA version so it has some unique electronics related to the EGR system. I had some tach problems in the past which I feel has some part of the blame. I have a manual on/off switch wired into the fuse located behind the glove box. In the past the tach was non-op with the fuse removed. With the fuse the tach would work but the crazy tranny would not upshift. So I gave up on having a working tach. I later looked over the elecricals related to the EGR and pulled an EGR relay in the right kick panel. I then wired in the on/off switch. Everything seemed fine for about 3 months until last week. I had downshifted to pass someone on the freeway and it refused to upshift until I flipped the switch to turn off the tach. So I clicked the switch on and it downshifted again. I am completely baffled by this gremlin since I thought there weren't any electric controls on the tranny. What gives? I got used to having a tach that worked now that I have to keep it turned off its really annoying. How can these two items be related? It's obvious I'm overlooking something. Yes, the bowden cable is adjusted correctly.

Hmmm...
The electronics stuff has me wondering...I am not familar with that. Does your engine have the switchover valves on top of the valve cover that controls the vac to the trans? (the little black box) This may be suspect...the tach affecting this is really confusing. Your car has a electronic EGR? I think I am out of my water but want to try and help.. Anyone that wants to offer help, do...this is a cool dude! |

Not familiar with the '85 300D but my 83' 300D has a switch under the fuel feed that downshifts the tranny when activated. Maybe yours has the same and it is stuck.

Downshift switch is under the accelerator pedal (inside car)...check that too
Fuel Feed=accelerator pedal=gas pedal (not politically correct )= the go button... |
