O' the indestructability of an old mercedes
Last Friday night on my way home in my 76 300d I got of the 15 freeway and hit a rather large bump. That bump was a fallen light pole that spanned the whole off ramp. I pulled over to examine my wheels. There was virtually no damage whatsoever. About 12 people ran over the same pole after me and everyone of them blew at least two of their tires and completely f-ed up their rims.
We pulled the pole out of the road and waited for the cops. WHen they finally arrived they told us that california state code states that an object that large is the responsibiliy of the drive and hence all repairs were the responsibility of the driver. I didn't care but it sucked for everyone else. It didn't even screw up my alignment. Of course then agian, it is probably just because my shocks are complete crap and let the wheels bounce up fast enough to avoid damage. |

I'd say it was your shocks. See, even when they suck, don't change them. They might save your rims someday.

Interesting.... You mean to tell me that a light pole, installed, maintained and operated by the State of Kalifornia falls over on an off-ramp, basically is unavoidable, and its not their fault???? That would leave me wanting to put bullets into someone at the Kali DOT. RT

Let me tell you this story. In 1997, a big rainstorm came to Houston, and flooded part of the Southwest side of town. I live on the other side of town, and my school was over there. My mom was driving me to school in the 300SD, we were unaware of the high waters. As we turned down the street to the school, the water was pretty low, then, it started to get bumper level. The Benz died, and I started crying (I was in the 4th grade then), I was scared. I opened the door, and a little trickle of water came in. I shut the door. My mom opened the drivers side, and we waded out and got help from some nice people in the neighborhood. They let us come into their houses soaking wet, and let us use the phone to call for help. That just goes to show you that there are still good people out there. We called a tow truck, and we were going to have it towed to the indy. My brother and sister arrived after the water receded, and my brother took pictures of the car for insurance purposes. He tried to start it (I think he should not have tried that), and water came out of the exhaust pipe. We thought it was totalled. My mom thought she was going to get a new car, she was kind of glad, because the neighbor was selling his 95 LS400 around that time. But oh was she wrong, (although she got that Lex about two years later). About a week later, the indy called, and said, "Your car's ready." HA!!! All they did was remove the interior carpet, clean it, and let it dry out, everything else was pretty much fine. I knew from then on out that I wanted to drive that car in high school, or a MB diesel. That is a testament to MB indestructability. We still have that car, still running strong.

I must be crazy, when I see water that deep I speed up and blast through it Deepest yet was in the rich side of the city, it was in a swampy area (near a lake, real low elevation) and the road was flooded from all the rain, I'd estimate the water was maybe 1 foot deep or so, I was being followed by some person in an SUV, I took the water around 25-30mph it was spraying everywhere.....the suv person was going through at about 3mph....he must have thought I was insane......which I probably am.

Partially why the city police got their "driving" complaints...apparently gravel roads with puddles on them aren't allowed to be driven upon? Bogus.. I've blasted puddles to my door sills...yay... If you water the diesel's intake...just treat her good and pull them glow plugs I've had muddy water on my roof before...gotta keep that sunroof closed |

Even the glass!
On a recent trip to Halifax with my '76, I was passing under one of the two suspension bridges that span the harbour when a good sized rock came down, presumably from the bridge, and bounced off the hood then struck the windshield. I actaully saw the dark shape of the stone- probably about 2 incher. It made a very loud bang on the windshield and I pulled over to check the damage. I saw a small indent on the hood, but could not find a single mark or chip on the glass- NOTHING! Absolutely Brinks Truck build quality here!
