80 SD Oil Cooler Problem
#1 Today, 08:14 PM
Wallace Schulz Registered User Join Date: Dec 2003 Location: St. Louis Posts: 11 80 SD Oil Cooler problem -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have a 1980 SD. Local mechanic was going to flush my radiator. He was disconneting the fitting to the oil cooler. Connection is aluminum. Connector is steel nut. Threads of aluminum element apparently ruined. Anyone have this experience; or, any ideas on how to correct? Dealer wants six hundred dollars, plus, for new cooler. Can this be repaired. Rev W. Schulz |

I don't think it can be repaired, but I am not sure. Give it a couple of hours, and you will have more responses.
As a side note, I think I have a spare (used) oil cooler that will fit your SD. Let me know if you are interested. -Larry

Why was he disconnecting the oil cooler to flush the radiator? To prevent this use an anti seize compound on the threads.

Why was the mechanic messing with the oil cooler in order to flush the radiator? Am I missing something? At any rate, a new oil cooler from Fastlane shouldn't be much over 300-350 dollars I wouldn't think.

Dang phone call, I would have beat you if I hadn't had to answer the phone in the middle of my post.

Most here will recommend getting a used oil cooler from the boneyard but the used one may have the same issue. The mechanic should be paying for this as there is no reason to mess with the oil cooler to flush the cooling system. If it were mine I would try to have a good welding/machine shop weld up the stripped threads and re-tap. Should be a alot less than a new or maybe even a used one. RT

OK, did a quick search, and I found it here. It's a post by Brian Kmetz. I haven't tried this myself, and I don't know if it applies to your situation, but it might be worth a look. |

Sounds doable to me. I do see them on ebay occasionally for around $80 if I remember correctly.

I would have that dumbass mechanic fix it. He's the idiot who broke it in the first place.

I fixed the cooler on my SD. Don't consider buying a new one. I didn't check that link, but I have the tap still form when I did mine and I'd be glad to sell it to you. I paid around $30 for it, but I'd sell for $15. Give me your address and it's yours. Also, if you want I can dig up the part numbers for the fitting. Also, when you buy the fitting buy the proper crush washer. You'll need that part as well.
Thanks David

Here's the link to the thread I started awhile back. It gives ALL numbers and instructions for the procedure. It will be easier and faster for you than the mbz.org link, or at least I think so.
Thanks Again David Almost forgot to add the link....duh.... are the oil cooler fittings replaceable by themselves?
