82 300TD tranny affair

posted about this before, but she's still running after years on a tempramental tranny. Only engages after engine has idled for 20 minutes or so and then will engage in 1st usually, D not so much at the offset. But once warm and on the road, runs fine except for increasing slipping/searching between 2 and 3 (could be 3 and 4?) when on any slight grade. How many gears in these trannies anyway? Reverse is always OK.

Not confident at tackling a rebuild and not even sure i could pull the thing and replace with a junkyard tranny myself but ready to try. Didn't find any threads on how to remove a transmission...

Anyone know of resources for trannmissions in the Monterey or Central Coast region. Any other thoughts ideas? Local mercedes mechanic wants to charge 2k for a rebuilt tranny plus labour at $125/hr - not an option.

97 RAM2500 Cummins affair. Big longass lifted biodiesel thing. Too big. Too spendy - got rid of it. Sure could pull some weight though.

Try the "WTB" route

You could start by placing a WTB (want to buy) ad in the Used Parts for Sale and Wanted section of this forum (look toward the bottom of the main page).

I was in a similar situation some time back and got good replies.

You might check the PNP in Moss Landing, I have see some clean cars coming in once in a while.

There is an 82 300D in the San Jose south PNP on monterey rd.

85 300CD and a 85 300SD, both with 221K miles.

Could be a failing front pump. Have you checked for good flow at the cooler lines? These transmissions have a rear pump too so once you're moving it can provide pressure.

Thanks Zacharius, Charmalu and Kerry - that sounds like an exciting possibility. Will look into how to locate pump and check pressure.

Otherwise, if this is a 722.3 transmission that I'm looking for, what models could a replacement be pulled from if it doesn't specifically need to be an 82 300TD?

Presumably, coming from a junk yard, it's a hit or miss affair and no way of knowing if your not someone who knows if you know what I mean. And 220k miles - wouldn't that be near the end of a transmission's life cycle anyway?

Cheers

There is a ATSG pdf with information about the 722.3/4 transmissions that you might find extremely useful. It has a troubleshooting section that you might wanna look at:

Yep, you are taking a risk for sure. Best to find a car that drives so you can road test the transmission before buying it.

That's true but there are means of making a rough guess about the health of the engine and transmission. If it looks as if the vehicle ended up in the junkyard due to being totaled in an accident, I'd say the odds of the drivetrain being good are better than if the car's body looks just fine.
