'84 190D won't shut off

After an oil, air and fuel filter change and having much frustration getting the vehicle to start (air in the fuel lines slow to bleed) the engine continues to run when I turn off the ignition switch and remove the key. Even disconnecting the battery will not stop the engine from running.

While changing out the pre-filter I snapped the nipple off what the MB dealer called a "fuel heater' and had to replace the $2.25 (perhaps the cheapest MB part available) plastic end piece that is retained in the assembly by a C-clip.

Am pretty clueless as to how a Diesel engine is shut off?

Tis better to have it running and clutching it off then to not have it running!

Thanks for the help, this is a great forum.

There is a lever, under the hood, on the injector pump, with red STOP lettering. Pressing this will mechanically stop the fuel.

Normal key shut off is by vacuum. A vacuum line runs from the vacuum source, to the key and to the injector pump. A leak will result in no shut off.

Check the rear of the IP to see if the tubing has been unplugged.

P.S. The battery on pre-electronic fuel injection diesels is irrelevant once the diesel starts.

Best Regards,
Jim

Thanks.

For whatever reason a search on the subject turned up nothing relevant though I was sure that I had previously read about this problem being pretty common. When I wrote the thread, lots of info appeared ?????

Can anyone reccomend good sources for info on MB Diesel engines and how they are designed/work/troubleshot/repair? My Chiltons manual for this vehicle is disappointingly "negligent" on information for Diesels.

This Forum is the only resource you will ever need
From here you will find links to Factory Service Manuals, far better than non-Mercedes maintenance manuals.
The members of this Forum are a caring, sharing bunch who can nut-out any problem which you may encounter.
The only thing YOU MUST DO, is to try to find the information yourself FIRST. Most issues have been resolved already. The Search facility, while not full featured, is still a good tool and, given the right parameters, will provide the results you seek.

Thanks again and I agree about the quality conscience, caring, and knowledgable members of this forum.

Found a rotted off vacuum hose at the shut off valve and replaced it, problem solved. Knowing where to look is always the biggest first step.

Ordered the MB CD repair ROM and hopfully, in the future, my questions to this forum will be a bit better educated and informed.

As soon as the Dodge Ram PU is out of the shop (again!) I'll probably go through the entire vacuum system on this vehicle.
