Anybody know if a tranny from a 1986 560 SEL will fit in an '83 300SD
 

Continuing to hunt for a cheap tranny, any opinions about whether the 560 SEL would fit? Heard it did but looking for advice...

I can't tell you 110% that they won't swap because I don't have firsthand experience. BUT, I would wager that they will not swap. I remember hearing somewhere that the gas and diesel trannies will not swap.

NO!!! NO NO NO NO!!!! I know this for sure - the diesel has a angular bellhousing and the gas has a round one.

No you need a tranny from an 82-84 300SD or maybe a 300D of the same years.

My 82 SD has a tranny from an 83 D in it, fits great but the speedo doesnt work because the tailshaft is different....anybody ever get this off? The tailshaft I mean? I have the right tranny to swap it out with but I am afraid that once I get the tailshaft of 48 tiny springs or something will fall out and I will never get it to work again..... Anybody deal with this before?

I read somewhere that the 86-89 560SL and 81-83 300SD share the same tranny, the 722.303. I may be wrong though.
