407D Crew Twin Cab Diesel Truck 15k Miles

This would make a great SUV. I think it is one cool truck but then I am a little warped.

Not a bad deal if you don't mind shipping from Germany! Pretty cool vehicle though.

Man would I LOVE to get my hands on one of those 309s or 407s...but, you gotta question the wisdom of putting a 67hp engine in a vehicle like that.

Brian Carlton 02-06-2005 10:17 AM

It's certainly a good looking vehicle. But, honestly, what could you do with it?

You cannot haul people around with it very comfortably, or easily, with 67 hp.

It weighs about 6,000 lbs. empty!

Just imagine loading it up with 2000 lbs. of cargo and driving it with the four cylinder. :(

It could be done, just not very fast.

Well, there is one significant benefit:

You cannot even see the Expedition $hitbox that is 9 inches behind your rear bumper with steam pouring out of his ears. :D

Turbo OM616

This would be the ideal vehicle to add a turbo charger to. Try and give that 4 banger another 20-30 HP.

Look at the plus side....you aren't going to get busted speeding on the freeway......................but coming off a mountain maybe....

Diesel Power 02-06-2005 02:52 PM

You won't get busted for speeding on the highway, but you'll be sure to get busted for obstructing the flow of traffic!! :D

phantoms 02-06-2005 02:55 PM

I'm sure this thing is geared very low. I noticed it does have a manual and I suspect that it wouldn't be any slower than alot of the old panel trucks we've had around here (internationals, etc.).

My 307d was a 22' Class A motorhome with a 5 spd manual. It would do 64-67mph on the motorways without a problem as long as it was flat. It was quick to slow down in hilly country and it wasn't a great speedster 0-60mph. But it was downright astonishing that the little 616 engine had been effectively pulling that vehicle around for 130k miles without a hesitation.

My 409d has the 617na. I believe 0-40mph it's quicker than a 123 with an auto tranny. But it has a lower geared rear end than my 307d (I think) and the engine is really turning fast at 65mph.

Brain,
You know as well as I do that the only time you'd get busted in Texas for that would be if you were obstructing the flow of cops to a Krispy-Kreme.

Ara T. 02-07-2005 01:44 AM

I don't understand...why would Mercedes even put such an underpowered engine in such a heavy vehicle? It is quite an interesting find though.

Wodnek 02-07-2005 06:45 AM

My guess is that it was made for urban work not highway cruising. I don't think we have any such thing here. Everything we sell here seems to be made to do 80 plus.

Hehe, actually doing the speed limit around here is a serious obstruction to the flow of traffic.

I had one "lady" driver that layed on her horn, and flipped me the bird, while passing me in a no passing zone for having the audacity to do 55 in a 55 zone a few days ago.

And for those speed demons of the group, there was two lanes, the oncoming lane, and the one I was in, so no "slow lane" on this stretch of road.

Its one of those times when you just WISH that there had been a cop hiding in the weeds.
