Glowplug change in E300 in progress
 

So far no seized plugs !!! The only casualties are two of the plastic retainers for the glowplug harness that snap onto the end of the glowplugs. They look replaceable as they easily (go figure) unsnap from the harness and have a Mercedes Star on them along with a number, 019 545 54 28.

I will check with The Stealer tomorrow to see if they stock them. I already have an email in to Phil at Fastlane should The Stealer fail me.

I've been following the excellent writeup by Lightman on glowplug replacement and only had to deviate slightly during the intake manifold removal phase. I had to whack it with a piece of wood from underneath to "unstick" it. Upon removal of all the fasteners, it resisted being simply lifted off.

"whack it with a piece of wood". That's tech-talk, 10-4, gotta learn that. j/k, good job......

You ought to replace all of those plastic clips whether they are broken or not. I think Rick Miley gave the part numbers, etc. in Lightman's write up. The ones that aren't broken likely will break soon anyway.

Yep. I'm going to. I already replaced the ones on top of the intake manifold when I got the car.

Just waiting on my fuel lines and other parts to show up now.

As a side note, the plugs that came out were Beru and had a Mercedes Star on them. I'm going back in with Bosch. I was pleasantly surprised to not see a bunch of carbon down the glowplug holes. The intake manifold and EGR are going to get a really, really good cleaning the next couple of days.

I tired diesel to clean the manifold with absolutely no luck. Then I used POR15 Marine Clean and it was fantastic!! Quick and made it squeeky clean without too much effort.

The secret is to make sure all the fasteners are out before a whackin' on it and to use a BIG hammer for a One Shot Deal. :D

The pieces of phenolic in my toolbox weren't long enough and I didn't trust the 6000/7000 alloy series of aluminum drifts that were to do it without marring the manifold. I settled on a 1" x 1" piece of pressure treated pine that I had leftover from mounting my wife's Bluebird houses.
