Seeing as how I didn't ask him to , it's not a shill.

I'm gathering that Mr. Carlton likes the car or I doubt he would be a bidder. I take this as a compliment.

It's interesting to see all of the controversey in the two threads currently running on this car.

I realize that most of you are quite loyal to your 617's and that you take offense that I would suggest that my 300SD is a logical replacement. But , it's just my opinion, that's all...As I said earlier. Make of it what you will.

I don't see any W140 diesels anymore, so when one comes about I get excited...

Shill bidding comment was a joke!

I was just kidding with my comment on Brian Carlton shill bidding for you. Everyone that read that surely knew I was kidding so don't worry.

Like I said before, the beauty of eBay is that both the honest and dishonest can prosper...

And like someone else stated in the other thread about your car, considering how we have beaten down your comments on that auction, no one that knows these cars as well as we do would buy it so we're definitely not your customer base for that sale. The beautiful thing about life also is that people like us are probably about 10% of the people who would be interested in buying your car. So you have a massive 90% + of potential customers being ignorant about the car so you're cool. For me personally, when I look at an auction and see false statements from the seller, I just wonder what else the seller could be lying/being wrong about.

If you feel that the 350 diesel is truly a bulletproof motor, would you be willing to put a link to this site on your ebay ad? How about recommending potential customers come here and do a search? That would surely substantiate your claims about the 350 motor, right?

One thing is for certain Herb- you are the master when it comes to documentation for these auctions. You have brought the practice of making mouths water at the sight of your killer bomb photography and diabolically soothing writeups to the level of artform. Your cars are superlative examples for sure, this one being the exception due to it's faulty engine design, but I see good ones on eBay all the time and none of them seem to compare with yours. I came to the conclusion that it's not the car, it's crafty ole Herb! Hey somebody's gotta sell 'em right?
I am onto you though

Well, I like looking at it, that's for sure. But, I don't think I would want to look at it in my own garage.

It would be like looking at a primadonna, not knowing when the next shoe is going to drop.

I just bid it up a bit so that it doesn't end up like the last one (E300TD) did.

Shill bidding

I have to agree with braverichard. Bumping up a 'good old friend' s bid is shill bidding. It's not right and what is wrong with Ebay. He confirms this when he states "I wouldn't want to see it in my garage" and "I just bid it up so it wouldn't end up like the last one(E300TD) did". Makes me think of the phrase in the movie Sling Blade... "Ah just seen red"

Well, you clearly don't understand what a shill bid is. Herb Phillips is not a "good old friend" of mine. In fact, some people here are of the opinion that the opposite is the case.

I have had no contact with Herb regarding this vehicle and I am not, in reality, bidding it up specifically for him, my previous comments notwithstanding.

I bid it up just for grins. There is no law against that and it is not shill bidding.

If I can purchase it for $11K, then I will do so. At that price, I'll take my chances with the primadonna vehicle.

It's a sickness. I probably bid on half a dozen cars a week (including most of Herb's auctions), always with a max bid that I'd be thrilled to pay. It keeps me amused. Maybe someday I'll actually win one.

I had a 92 300SE and Herb's ad makes me drool again. I loved that car and hated the $17,000 for repairs in the 30K I put on it. Getting rid of it was one of my happiest days of my life. It was identical! Beautiful photography!!

$17K in 30K miles? I believe it. In fact, I've heard worse stories. It is called the price of owning a used W140! Afterall, there are only two happy days in the life of a used W140 owner: the day he/she bought it and the day he/she sold it.

3.5 bulletproof

Although many of the 3.5 through rods, Some have high miles and are still trucking along with the stock motor. It seemed to be more luck than anything with these motors. The emissions seemed to be a killer on these motors too if not modified. I love the 617 though for it really is bulletproof.

It was all under Star Mark warranty, but before that all ran out, I traded for a 99 Escalade and have never been happier. They told me early on that my 82 240D would outlast the 140 model anytime and you all know that is more than true. If they would just have gotten all the electronics and head gaskets right, I'd still be driving it.

Well Herb,

I held down the fort with it for six days at $11K.

You're on your own now.
