OK, Hattie, if it stays below $11K, I'll buy it.

I might even let you drive it.

Come on you should bet up to lets say $15k.

If I drive it then I will want one more....sure I'll take her for a spin if you don't mind.

We can race, you in my SDL vs me in the 300SD.

I just got one

I bought one, 1992 300SD W140 3.5L, with 275K miles on it recently. Well maintained by a doctor for his commuting. He got a new 2005 320CDI, but still misses his old 300SD. My goal is to run WVO blend on this one, saving money every month, and put that into a monthly payment for an Audi A8, probably 1998 model with above 100K miles (weekend car), looking for one go for less than USD$10K . Or maybe an SUV Touareg V6 if I can afford it.

Nice ride, these W140's, but not as fun as Audi Quattro.

With 275K on the clock, are you not a bit concerned about the repairs that it will certainly need? Can you do them yourself?

I don't know, last time I bought a well maintained car, it lasted for a long while. I paid $6000 for this 300SD. If it gives me 100K miles, I'll be happy.

BTW, the short block and turbo were replaced at 100K miles. New exhaust has 50K miles. New timing chain. Maintenance were done .Well, so far, so good.

I would be worried about the suspension. Their are fluid filled lower control arm bushings, that go bad quite often. It really is a dealer only job to change them, special tools are needed. $200 for parts and 5.5 hours labor last I heard.

The car itself should last forever, however I wouldn't buy a W140 without expecting to put a few grand a year into the thing.

Well, you aren't one to talk about the W140, I'm afraid.

What are you up to: $5K in parts alone within 12 months?

$5k! Ha back in Sep or Oct I was at $5,200. I must be north of $7k now. I will have $15k into this car by the time I finish restoring it. I don't care it is only money, I don't even keep track anymore. I rather put money into a classic MB at least I will have a nice car in the end. Restoring MB's is fun, their is a blue 6.9 the same color as my SDL for sale at a used car lot... But I think I will do a boat next, I want a little center console in another 2 years or so after I get my SDL closer to perfect and a cheap beater for school and winter. Probably a 20ft Chris Chraft...

It's rather interesting. You have a total of about $10K in it, including the purchase price.

I'm at about $10.5K including the purchase price.

Much higher purchase price, but, less work to do. Personally, I'll take it.

But you really are ahead, you have better paint and a better body. I need to replace at least one if not both front fenders. Remove some nice dents and get the car repainted. Their is $3k right their. Not to mention all of my plastic also needs painting, and the front bumper cover and two peices on the drivers side need to be replaced. Another $1k I am guessing. Next year or the year after I will probably do the body work. But if I can talk my parants into letting me use my moms car and get my mom a new car then, this spring I will paint it. I am going to try that is for sure...

That is very true. Painting is where I draw the line. The cost of a very good paint job is $4K today. Considering that this amount of money will get you half way to an SDL in very good condition, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Additionally, most of the paint today cannot be considered to last for 10 years unless the vehicle is garaged. It cannot match the durability of the factory finish.

Both of these are repainted FL vehicles, but, thankfully, both live in the garage.

My car has 10 year old non factory paint anyway. The shine is great and it has lots of life left in it. But their are just so many chips and scratch's. It looks good from 20ft away but like crap close up.

After I paint it, it will live in either a garage or under a very good car cover. Only to come out on dry days when their is no salt and sand on the road.

Also school beats the crap out of cars, I need to stop taking it their. I have some nice dents and the paint on my rear bumper is screwed up thanks to someone hitting it. Thanks for leaving a note. Luckly it is a plactic bumper so only paint damage.
