W124 E300D SRS light mind of it's own...

my E300D's SRS warning light is coming on seemingly randomly after around 1-2hrs driving (seems to prefer motorway speeds- 70-85mph). It'll come on for a couple of secs, then maybe a second. One trip it came on around 6-8 times, last long trip only once. Any ideas?

(my steering lock is not working properly and I'm wondering if the car had work done to the wheel in the past which may be affecting the airbag connections?)

It has been a few years since this happened to me... But as I remember it, the SRS (Airbag system) does an automatic safety check every 1-2 hours of drive time. There is only a problem if the SRS light comes on and stays on for several seconds - I want to say 10 or more. This would usually indicate that the contacts in the airbag mechanism are shot and would need to be replaced.

Mine does it, too. Only on very long trips. I just ignore it.

Pull your steering wheel

Clean off the little copper contacts on the inside of the steering wheel.

Could someone elaborate more on these copper contacts that need to be cleaned?

I thought by '95 the 124 uses a clock spring rather than sliding contacts for the airbag.

Mine Too!

Only after several hours on the road, and at higher HWY speed. You guys are making me feel a whole better about it. Local indy says no worries too.

At first I was afraid the bag might blow in my face at 80 mph. Rigged an emergency throttle extension and wheel arm so I could drive "British" style home...not really...kidding but I sure the hell thought about it. Slid back the seat bottom & lowered the seat back so far down I could barely see the road...classic!

Mine only comes on at night (LOL), just a flicker so fast it has to be dark to catch it.

Its been that way for years now.

I know this is an old post but.... I'm having the same problem as well but *the catch* When the light comes on, the power to my stereo goes out.. when the light goes back off (after 2-4 secs) the power will come back on again..

This light things only happened once and, when it did, it did the same thing maybe a minute later but, the light stayed on noticeably shorter than the first time...

So, is this still just a 'self check' even with the power going off to the stereo when the lamp is illuminated but, coming back on once the light goes off?

with your symptoms, I'd say you have a wiring harness issue...

How many miles on your car? If it's not wiring you might want to check the voltage regulator as my 300E did similar just before the regulator died at 200k.

Mine does it too. I also think its related to the wiring harness. When my srs light starts going on, my climate control unit stops working. I hit the stop button on the CCU, wait a couple of minutes, the srs light goes out and the CCU starts working again. Notes: Wiring harness replaced at around 130,000; CCU replaced with remanufactured unit from Phil half a year ago. I still think its about the wiring harness.
