Glowplugs Came Out Thank G*d

Reading all the posts about W210 stuck glow plugs, I was totally convinced that when my glowplug fault-time came (as it did, last weekend), I would have six stuck glowplugs.

But I just learned that all were OK. I'm home free.

That's great. Take care of that E300D turbo....us non-turbo guys will be looking to upgrade somewhere down the line.

Yeah, I was lucky too. I've got everything back together except the intake manifold. It's outside sitting upside down with about a gallon of diesel fuel in it
soaking the soot off (hopefully). I'll reinstall it tomorrow.

Were your old plugs Beru? I replaced mine with Bosch Duratherms.

I was reminded by Lightman to save an old fuel line in case you want to run some diesel purge through it later! Do a search on Diesel Purge and you'll find a great writeup on it done just recently.

Diesel fuel didn't work worth a damn on my manifold. I then used POR15 Marine Clean and it did a fantastic job. Highly recommended.

Oh, and congratualtions on the glow plug R&R. Having one stuck isn't fun.

Len,
Where did you find this POR15 Marine Clean? What is it exactly? Is it a degreaser?

Thanks,
Sam

Not sure what the originals were -- stock MB, I suppose. The new ones are also from MB and they are Bosch.

$800 for this work

What does that mean, $800 for this work? Mine cost $138.
Not having to go to Thanksgiving dinner at my brother's - priceless.

Oh yes. I lubricate all threaded fasteners/devices unless specifically directed not to.

I was under the impression you were doing this as a DIY? My plugs were like $20 apiece. Throwing in the plastic fuel lines, fuel strainer and filter, and some plastic clips, I think I'm around $170 in parts?

Here is the POR15 product Sam. There is probably some other commercial product available locally, but I had this on hand and it worked beautifully.

http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=156

On the antisieze, I used it but I'm not convinced that it will do any good. It won't hurt, but I just think the environment that glow plug works in just isn't condussive to easy removal of the glowplugs. I think it was Aklim who said that he was just going to remove them every year, ream out the hole and see if that was a solution. If you DIY, that might be the way to go.

What plugs did you use? I haven't seen them that cheap before.

Conroe & Delta:

This was not DIY, but a well-regarded Mercedes-only service facility -- NOT a Dealer but people that I definitely trust. $800 included a $600 labor charge...I told them "go slow" " do it right" etc and of course I handed them the Lightman post and the other relevant posts, all put into one document.
