What should a good 300TD go for?
Hey, all.
What are 300TDs going for in your neck of the woods? I've been trying to find one here in the South (near Nashville) and one just popped up. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound very affordable to me. The ad says something to the tune of, "NADA value of $10,500 but asking $6,000." Doesn't that sound a tad high?? I'll call them today and try to get the skinny on it. Thanks! |
year, mileage, previous records?
|
I haven't had a chance to call the number yet. Supposed to be an '84.
|
I have an '85 I might sell for $10,500. :D
|
R Leo,
I wouldn't blame you. :D I looked on KBB (which I know doesn't provide a perfect estimate...) and it said that an 85 TD with 100k miles on it in excellent condition would be worth something like $1800. Not that this is a reasonable number, but it makes me wonder where the guy got his NADA number from... |
Went to NADA
I’m in Nashville also and saw this one in the paper. Checked NADA on-line, [www.nada.com] says $10K “high retail” for this car. They classify it as a classic (pre ’85). No entries for mileage or condition were requested or allowed during my search at NADA. No mileage was given in the newspaper ad, but of course we all know that is not important, as these cars can go for millions of miles ;) . Also keep in mind that NADA is the "National Association of Automotive Dealers" so you may view the information accordingly. If you check it out please post back on your experience, I’m curious. Look at completed sales on e-bay, if it’s really an excellent car, with good records and lower miles his asking price does not seem too far out.

Were have you guys been? Talk to Herb a nice clean wagon will go for $6k easly on ebay.
Try to find a clean 1987 300TD, offer the seller $3k and see how hard he laughs at you. :D Nice clean 350SDL's can still fetch low teens. I have seen showroom W126's in the high teen low twenty range. Edit: I just did a search on Autotrader.com. Any distance from my zip. Only two W123 wagons came up one for $3k another for $5,200 Lots of sedans came up and two W123's were over $10k. A few were close to $10k. The average price for a 350SDL on Autotrader is $13k |
I was browsing AutoTrader on the 300SDL. '86-'87. The prices range from $2500. to $18,000. asking. Just an amazing range of prices for the same vehicle.
I wonder how much work you would need to put into an $18K vehicle? The electrical relays and all electric switches and motors are all 18 years old. All the suspension bushings are all 18 years old. I'm not sure that you get what you pay for when you purchase one of these. Naturally, the paint and interior is immaculate, but still..................... |

On the TD get some info on maintenace, if it has been fairly well maintained 5-6 is probably reasonable |
and then, if you found something super nice, would you be afraid to drive it when it rains, or park it at the supermarket, or let kids ride in it, take it to the beach, etc.? Yes, my car at times gets used like a taxi, but I use it. Has some rust I plan to fix this summer, I probably will, and still drive it to work everyday. I for one, plan on extracting a great deal of use, security and enjoyment out of my ride. IMHO, it was designed for just such reasons. :D
|
I have a guy pursuing me to sell me a naturally aspirated wagon for $1500. It is a little worse for wear but it is a good, drivable, well-maintained wagon.
Think it would resell on eBay? |

Naturally for a vehicle that is not in immaculate condition, you would want to stay at least four feet away from it with all photos. :D Unless you do a terrible job (which I doubt), the vehicle would have to sell at $2K or above, IMHO. |
It should sell, if
it's this color!
[ I actually thought about driving down to have a look at this one when it first came up. I thought it might stay in the low teens, as in 13 hundred. WRONG AGAIN! Cracks in dash, ripped seat, bad tires, "virtually no rust" (does that mean it only has virtual rust or not?), hasn't been driven in years, .......... Clay |
$3850.???
What are these people on crack???  The one BHD bought for $2800. was much nicer than this one and they accused him of paying too much. :D |
Maybe so
[QUOTE=Brian Carlton]$3850.???
What are these people on crack???  All I can figure is that it must be some sort of flashback. High bidder’s mom used to own this car, color and all. He used to take Bobbie Sue to the drive-in movies in it and it’s where they both got to “second base” for the first time. Later, he married, Shirley, who now goes about 260, and nags him and the kids constantly. Just trying to reclaim a bit of his lost youth, and since he’s a controller for XYZ Industries in Atlanta, money is no object. At least I hope that’s it. I can’t even imagine the other bidder’s story…………. and I’ve got a pretty good imagination. Clay edit-- Just noticed that both high bidders have ZERO history. High bidder has been a member for about 3 years, his car finally showed up! #2 joined yesterday..... |
Obvious shill bidding....
I can't tell you how much I love that color, though. Color alone is worth a grand! (it's a pea-soup love thing.....) :D |
If I'm buying, the cherry showroom condition ones should go for about $1800.
If I'm selling, add another zero... I'm looking for one for SWMBO right now and I'm concerned that they are really too hot for me to handle....but that one that someone here got for $1800 out of Dallas and drove home....man I wish I had found that one.. |
Wow!
Closed it out at $3850. No last minute "rush" on this one. Interesting to see if it shows up again next week. Won't be hard to ID with that color.
Yo, ferreed, did you check out the local wagon today? |

There's a 80 wagon in tampa in parts cars on ebay last check was $665- runs and drives, comes with a third seat. Very dirty and has two rust spots. I may pick it up/ clean it/ fix it/ resell it- whadda I need with FOUR MB's????? Three of which would be wagons?????
BTW My '80 wagons has Unknown miles- perhaps around 300K but runs great with no big problems has A/C and heat, lives for I-95 and the junkyard. Flawless dependability for the last three years- $2400. The wife's '82 bought from the original owner ( a doctor with 4 MB's) at 126K- $3000. Again- those are Florida prices for one living here and willing to look hard. |
